On experience

In all the arguing over who has more executive experience--a bayou bait shop owner, Sarah Palin, or Barack Obama--one thing seems to be lost to me.

Specifically, exactly how much experience in government do we want?  Do we really want someone who has gotten used to the horse trading, backroom deals, and vote-buying that characterize our legislatures and executive branches, or would it be better to have someone come in and say “what on earth is going on here?”

Maybe the latter guy (or gal) would run into too many problems due to a lack of experience.  On the other hand, maybe they would have the ability to see the screw-ups that have become a part of standard operating procedure in DC, and maybe they’d have a chance to fix them.

At least, they’d have a chance if they figured out who was leaking everything to the NY Times and Washington Post.  But that’s another issue.

This is the trap McCain has set. Everytime the word EXPERIENCE is mentioned, regardless the context, it works against Obama. The laughable Dem response that Obama has experience because he has been running for president ever since he came to the Senate does not stand up to even the mildest scrunity.

McCain by contrast has actual service in the senate, combat experience and the experience of living 72 years fully engaged as an American citizen who has both witnessed and been a participant in our nations amazing history of the last 50 years.

‘’Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is—the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.’’ GWB 5/15/08

Dagummit, y’all wanna talk about experience? Let’s do it ... Sarah Palin was sworn in as the Governor of Alaska on December 4th, 2006.  That means she’s been functioning as governor for about 21 months.  She’s been able to dedicate that time exclusively to the job of running the state of Alaska.
BUT… On the other hand, Obama was sworn in as the U.S. Senator from Illinois in January of 2004, which means he’s held that office for approximately 55 months as of today.  However, he began his presidential campaign in February of 2007, just 36 months after he took office.  It’s at that point, after just 36 months in the U.S. Senate, that Obama (and his supporters) believed he was qualified to hold the office of President of the United States.  All so-called “experience” after this time frame was split between his Senate commitments and his presidential campaign.  So, let’s talk about what’s comparable here and it will be Palin’s 21 months of undivided “experience” to Obama’s 36 months of undivided “experience.” It seems to me, that if 36 months in the U.S. Senate is all the “experience” required to run for President of the United States, than certainly 21 months as a state governor is enough “experience” to run for Vice President of the United States.
I mean, fair is fair, right?  If Obama is qualified to be President at 36 months “experience,” then certainly Palin is qualified to be Vice President at 21 months experience.

Probably the biggest experience that qualifies Palin, IMO, is the experience (unique to Alaska, Nevada, and other states mostly owned by the federal government) of having one’s economy uniquely subservient to federal mismanagement.  Someone who understands that has experience that will be very valuable in DC.
