OIL - Help I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get UP!

Past 24 hours Iran test fires 9 missiles to demonstrate they can blow up Israel.

Oil price doesn’t budge and drifts lower a bit.

And there’s oil bubbling up out of the ground in Northern Iraq

And there are ten reasons why Oil can’t get it on any more.

If Iran testing missiles doesn’t run the price of oil up then what will?

Hang on to your Amoco hat.

Interesting Chart Bob.

It shows that when oil finds it’s next trading range it will be between 80-100 bucks.  It hasn’t established one at these levels and cannot maintain them.  It must retreat to a trading range it already knows.  Nothing has changed fundamentally (other than Geopolitics) to hold these prices up.

And then sinking further as fundamentals come into line, to the 60-80 range.  I suspect that for quite a while it will stay there.  Go short OIL.

Good stuff.

Course (I can’t help myself Bob) if the Dems win the whole ball game in November it will get worse before it gets better.  Look what they have done to the economy since they took over in 2006.  WOW,

Yes, it will take some time to clean up the bush oil spill.
There’s no telling what other damage we will find until we are in there.

Of course it is still early in the day out here.

Yes, it will take some time to clean up the bush oil spill.

So how much time do you think that will take?  I fully expect that the Democrats will blame bush for all THEIR failures for the first two or three years.  Unlike the blame they gave bush for failures he inherited from Clinton (Like the crashing economy).

So, I just want someone to give me a stop loss as to when they no longer get to attempt to pass any bucks on all this.  It’s important to keep them honest.

Honest Democrat...... WOW we visit Oxymoronland once again

And all the conservatives blamed Clinton.  The hypocricy goes both ways.

Viewing Bob’s chart in a Rorschach manner, I see definite proof that prior to the dems gaining control over Congress, oil & gasoline were completely affordable for even the lower wage earners.....allowing them such extravagances as driving to the grocery store & buying food…
After the dems gained control, it clearly shows the sudden sky-rocket in the cost of oil.
THey must be trying to protect us from......us!

Your heart and unfortunate limitations tell you that’s true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not.

NBER:

On November 26, 2001, the committee determined that the peak of economic activity had occurred in March of that year…The March 2001 peak marked the end of the expansion that began in March 1991, an expansion that lasted exactly 10 years and was the longest in the NBER’s chronology.

RBB,

Can’t wait to read your NBER recitations to your fellow “progressives” about what is, and what is not, a recession.  Will you be starting anytime soon, or is this another selective application of principle?

If you read my link, you might have seen this second paragraph:

A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. A recession begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy reaches its trough. Between trough and peak, the economy is in an expansion. Expansion is the normal state of the economy; most recessions are brief and they have been rare in recent decades.

RBB,

I only read your links when they’ve got pretty pictures attached.

As for the definition of a recession, it seems that, conveniently, someone has moved the goalposts again.  The standard definition of a recession, since well before Samuelson’s seminal text, has been two (2) consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.  Your “new and improved” definition is noteworthy only in that it is non-specific, technically unmeasurable, and conveniently ill-defined.  Just about right for use by economics illiterate “progressive” Democrats.

Of course, that “new and improved” definition is something of a double-edged sword.  Was the US in a “recession” during 1994 and 1995 under Clinton.  By this new definition almost certainly… which explains in part the election of the “Class of’94” GOP Congress.  Again, was it a downturn or a real recession that lost AlGore the White House in 200?

Finally, we’re going on nearly two years of Democrat control of both Houses of Congress, and the possibility of a neophyte Democrat in the White House next year.  With an agenda that consist almost exclusively of more and higher taxes to be foisted on the country’s economy, the new, relaxed definition of a recession is going to come in mighty handy indeed!
