Obama Religious Affairs Adviser: ‘Jesus Was an Illegal Alien’

By P.J. Gladnick

Michelle Boorstein, writing in the Washington Post’s The Trail, sounded more like she was presenting a glowing Barack Obama campaign press release than a political story when she announced the hiring of Obama’s new religious affairs adviser:

Shaun Casey, who teaches religion and politics at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., has been hired by the Obama campaign to focus on outreach to evangelical voters.

Casey, who has been informally advising the Obama campaign on faith issues for a year, next month will become a formal part of the faith outreach staff, Casey said today. His title will be senior adviser for religious affairs.

The Obama campaign plans a strong push to attract religious voters—with small group “faith forums” held around the country, regular meetings with clergy of various faiths, frequent appearances in religious media and a faith outreach staff of a half-dozen that may grow as the general election nears. Expert observers, however, say they find the senator’s outreach to white evangelicals the weakest part of the effort. It will be Casey’s job, he explained, to get Barack Obama’s story and policy positions out into the evangelical world.

It will also be Shaun Casey’s job to explain to evangelicals his own religious beliefs such as his bizarre conviction that “Jesus was an illegal alien” which he proclaimed in Faithful Democrats:

...I am convinced Matthew included the flight to Egypt by Jesus and his family to show that Jesus’ own story was part of the ancient story of Israel.  They, too, fled to Egypt, suffered persecution, were redeemed by God, and then were empowered to live lives in solidarity with sojourners and aliens wherever they encountered them.  Likewise disciples of Jesus throughout history pick up the same ministry of solidarity with displaced people.  Jesus was an illegal alien and that ought to shape how we enter the current debate. But too often political ideology clouds good theology.  In the current debate over immigration policy it distresses me to no end that so many of my fellow church goers ignore this fundamental tenet that should be central to our identity.  Instead as theological amnesiacs we insist on a secular law and order ideology over a biblical mandate.

Great way for outreaching to evangelicals by reinterpreting the Bible to conform with trendy leftwing 21st century political ideology. Apparently Ms Boorstein did little research on the background of Shaun Casey who was previously in the news running cover for Obama over the Reverend Wright controversy. Boorstein also seems to imply that Casey himself is an evangelical without actually saying so:

[...]

Read the whole thing.  You just can’t make this kind of lunacy up.  Hope there’s more room under that bus.

Comments

I thought Jesus was just a Christian communist. No fancy clothes, renouncing worldly goods, breaking bread with all the country, a real workers’/peoples’ guy and so on. but an illegal alien too? They didn’t even have ID photos back then. WTF is this guy talking about?

Jesus was a citizen of a totalitarian socialist regime.  It enforced a rigid two-tier society, like what you lefties want to do here in the US.  He had no options for upward mobility, in spite of his carpentry skills.

Are you suggesting that Jesus would have been an amazing entrepreneur, if he had only had ‘upward mobility’? That he was a burgeoning capitalist who was kept down by the Roman Maoists?

That’s a fuckin’ line.

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

This is a stupid debate! Not that Robert108 introduced the subject or entered this post, it is of great interest. It is stupid on the part of the people mentioned in his post and others, because immigration was a wholly different kettle of fish in those days and it bears no direct relationship to the illegal immigration problem at our Southern borders today.

Jesus would and does love all human beings, even illegal aliens, even me. He would feed the hungry, clothe the naked and minister to both the temporal and spiritual needs of every human being. What He did not do and would refrain from doing today, is getting involved in the politics of this world system and pronounce judgment on matters of immigration. Rather, He would direct us to love the human being, while he would render (leave) to Caesar (world rulers) the affairs that concern them and only minister to the individual in front of Him.

While it is in the best interest of this country to seek and elect Christians to higher office, as servants of the people that look to God as the sole Guarantor of our Liberty; we should try and refrain from injecting Jesus’ into the temporal affairs of this world system; that is, to try and speak for Him on such matters.

Jesus was for Universal health care.

As I recall, most of the miraculous healings came without a co-pay!

Jesus was for Universal health care.

Sometimes you people get so silly it is ridiculous! If you are implying he was for National Health Insurance type of health care, I want to see the passages.

Jesus was and is after universal, spiritual health care, which is the message of the Gospel; but, even though it is free and available to everyone, only a tiny minority of human beings will ever sign up!

Wrong again! It was appropriated by the spiritual currency of faith. Plus, those not walking in faith, even after a healing, could have according to Jesus an even worse thing come upon them if they stopped believing in Him

No! When did he provide psychiatric counselling?

I fear you have absolutely no concept whatsoever of the soul/spirit nature of man and are therefore ignorant of what spiritual healing means. As I told Proof, even the physical healings were purchased by the spiritual currency of faith.

You are deliberately, with malice, IMO, trying to link Jesus to your liberal ideology and desire for socialized medicine; and I believe I have right to try and counter your remarks with what, I believe, to be the truth. I never said nor intimated that National Health Care or any health care could be purchased by faith, you deliberately twisted out of all proportion what I said to use as a whip against me out of malice. You said that Jesus did not charge anyone for healing, but HE, not me, HE said that without FAITH it was impossible to please God.

Lastly, who are you to tell anyone to lighten up? Whenever anyone comes to SA and tries to seriously, passionately defend their beliefs, Right or Left and you object, you and a few others employ some juvenile demand that they lighten up; or, in other words, you are telling them to stop saying what they believe because you don’t like it!

So was Joseph Stalin!

IMO Jesus was not for universal health care as we understand that term today; and neither was Stalin, at least not for tens of millions of people he killed.

For all the non-imbibers out there, let us not forget that Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine… not O’Doul’s.

So, are you calling Him an acoholic? Are you implying He was a bootlegger? Are you implying He approved of drunkenness? As opposed to many Evangelicals, I do not believe drinking alcoholic beverages is in itself a sin. However, if one has a tendency to frequent drunkennes or has alcoholic tendencies, for them it is a sin that must be overcome for their own welfare and that of the other lives they impact. The Holy Spirit through Paul told Christians not to be drunk with much wine, or in other words to drink until one cannot control their thoughts and base desires is wrong.

It is my understanding that the mother and father fled their own country with their son, where Jesus was being pursued by his own country that was actively seeking to kill him.  Wouldn’t he more likely be a political refugee?

Neiman,

This is exactly the sort of inferential accusation that I would expect of any of a number of adolescent, BDS-suffering, leftwing hate mongers who frequent this site.  You do nobody, least of all yourself, any honor by adopting their patently childish tactics.  There was nothing in either of my comments, both of which nearly anyone should have recognized as sarcastic and paradoxical, that would lead a moderately astute individual to ask the questions you have.

Of course, neither Jesus nor Joseph Stalin could be thought to favor universal healthcare as we know the term today.  That’s the point of the sarcasm, after all.

your liberal ideology and desire for socialized medicine;

As usual, e moron, you have it all wrong.  Firstly, you lie about the monarchists of the day(the Pharisees) being “conservatives”.  Secondly, Jesus was executed for political reasons, seeing that he questioned to power structure of the day, and was killed for it, much like Pelosi and the supporters of the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” want to kill conservative talk radio today.
Jesus was executed by the Romans after the most powerful local political group(the Pharisees) prevailed upon them to do their dirty work, much like the Dems use the MSM to do their lying for them.
To quote Pontius Pilate: “I find no fault with this man."(referring to Jesus) In much the same manner as the Duke lacrosse players were persecuted for the phony charge of rape for both racist and political reasons(although without the spiritual dimension, of course), Jesus was persecuted for being what he was, not for any crime.
The MSM/Dem coalition has wrongly persecuted many Republicans/conservatives in the same manner, while covering up many more serious crimes by their own people.
