NRA’s political clout is waning

It looks like the steam is gone from the gun control debate. Why you ask? It is not because Democrats have won the fight. It is just the opposite- they have given up the fight. Democrats — scarred by past NRA campaigns — almost never talk about gun control anymore.

What effects will this have on the 08 Presidential campaign? Democrats should be thrilled with recent past election victories in the Senate. NRA-backed candidates in Pennsylvania, Montana, Missouri, Minnesota and Virginia all lost in 2006, even though the gun group spent more than $1 million on their races, according to federal election data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics.

To be sure, we have not heard the last from the powerful NRA, but they could very well be a victim of their own success. They have pounded the Democrats into submission so badly that I am reminded of an old saying: if you can’t beat them, join them.

The NRA may have become a victim of its own success.

Congress hasn’t passed major legislation to restrict gun use in 14 years. Democrats—scarred by past NRA campaigns—almost never talk about the (losing) issue anymore.

So, the NRA is successful. Democrats don’t even try to bring up what has become a losing proposition for them and this is a bad thing for the NRA?

May equally bad things happen to the Republicans this Fall! Heh.

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

Well said, Proof.

The aftermath of the Assault Weapons Ban caused staggering Leftist losses in 1994, but it wasn’t until losing the Senate and White House that the Left learned that the RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) was indeed a Third Rail in politics.

But the way the RKBA supporters work is that they generally keep to themselves and stay out of politics unless and until riled.  Then they get energized vote and vote in great numbers.

Leftists understand that they will either lie or keep quiet about their past voting history and certainly about their gun control plans in the future if they hope to get elected.

That is to say, they have to lie to get elected.

Says something about the Left and politics, doesn’t it?

The Washington, DC gun ban seems to be going down.  Next, Oregon, then federal reciprocity just like for driver’s licenses.

Democrats — scarred by past NRA campaigns — almost never talk about gun control anymore.

Maybe when the Dem Party returns to America(and our Constitution), they will simply support the Second Amendment, like good Americans.  They are “scarred” because they were wrong on this issue, and they are wrong for America.

If life doesn’t begin at conception, why do they call it birth control?

A mea culpa from the libs on gun control?  Not bloody likely.  They have been very devious in their attempts to reduce guns by attacking gun shows and gun shops.  It’s an absolute guarantee that they will come out with guns blaxing trying to introduce gun control measures if they control both the presidency and the congress.

Considering the recent supreme court decision of terrorist rights, it hardly a sure thing that their Washington d.c. gun case decision will favor the 2nd amendment.

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.

Doc,

I don’t disagree with you.

Some politicians feared backlash

Many politicians were concerned that backing a stronger gun control bill could cost them their congressional seats. Some Democrats (the dumb ones) said passing a stronger gun control law would be worth the risk.

and here was something fun

Gun control caused Democrats to lose their grip on Congress (1994)

a. President Bill Clinton repeatedly blamed gun control (which he supported) as the reason that Democrats lost control of the Congress during the elections of 1994:

* January 14, 1995. “The fight for the assault-weapons ban cost 20 members their seats in Congress ... [and is] the reason the Republicans control the House."199

* January 24, 1995. “I don’t think it’s a secret to anybody in this room that several members of the last Congress who voted for [the Brady bill and the semi-auto ban] aren’t here tonight because they voted for it. . . . [A] lot of people laid down their seats in Congress."200

* April 27, 1999. “There are some [Democrats] who would be on this platform today who lost their seats in 1994 because they voted for the Brady Bill and they voted for the assault weapons ban."201

* June 4, 1999. “This Congress came to power after the 1994 elections because in critical races the people who voted for more modest things, like the Brady Bill . . . got beat. They got beat, Charlie."202

I think you are right that they will never give a mea culpa when directly addressing the American people.  But amongst the Leftist Cadre and strategizing as to how they will hoodwink the electorate is when you will catch them in rare moments of honesty.

Yeah, mz, the dems are so well practiced as being disenginous that they continually hoodwink the voters.  Like some have said, if they ran an ‘honest’ campaign they would never be elected.

If gun control is a left-right issue, can someone please explain why Vermont has for a long time and continues to receive the NRA’s best grade? Move_zig’s dichotomy is incorrect. Oversimplified like all the garbage you guys ingest around here. Maybe the issue has to do with the manner in which high population density leads to increased stupidity.

If gun control is a left-right issue…

To some extent it is a difference in ideology of strong, compassionate state vs citizen freedom.  I’ve seen this changing though.  People at DemocraticUnderground saying they’ve got to buy guns before Bushitler (TM) rounds them up into camps.

It’s largely a left/right issue but that’s been waning a bit recently.  I think the pendulum is swinging back, I’ve got a NRA friend going on about the increased handgun sales because of Obamas gun control ideas.

its just a function of the left’s irrational and religious faith in the government and compassionate, central power. when they realize that’s about as stupid as believing in god, perhaps they will come around. they have fallacious ideas about what humans and what governments actually are.

also, why do we value minimizing human deaths? do you get it? once there is 1 trillion people on the planet, i bet we will not value human life quite as much. shit, by then shooting people will be compassionate.

I see two instances where I minimize the value of death or the corrollary, maximize the value of the alternative.
1) some d*ckweed with an IED manufacturing plant blows himself up.  I do a happy dance because it is so very much better than the alternative.
2) We go to war because we see a growing threat against us and our allies with even civilians coming under direct, concerted attacks.  When we attack, civilians including children will die or be maimed.  This is the horrors of war.  In short, we endure the horrors of war when the horrors of not going are worse.
