Northern Lights North Dakota Style

A friend of mine sent a link to one of the most extraordinary set of pictures of last Thursday night’s Northern Lights show.

I have stood in awe of the northern lights in the past, seen them at 3 in the morning in the middle of winter and been moved.

This set of pictures was taken 15 miles north of Bismarck according to the website.

Really worth looking at.  Makes me just a little tiny bit homesick.

That is awesome! I love the northern lights and have seen them in central Ontario and Maine, but never anything like that. Thanks Gene!

Hi Gene!  I’m Rob from SA’s sister.  I live here in ND as well and was leaving home at about 10:20 pm on Thursday night.  I saw the Northern Lights dancing in the sky and had to go wake my kids up to come out and see them.  Being from Alaska, I would see the Northern Lights on a regular basis.  The lights that night were just like the ones in Alaska.  My kids loved them!  My husband just grunted in his sleep (he works early mornings).  Thank you for sharing the pictures, they are beautiful!

Wow, I’ve only seen lights like that once in my life (colors and dancing).

I’m from Grand Forks, and I missed that show, dangit.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Most excellent! I have never seen aurora, wrong time of year when I was in Alaska.

Gene, tell your friend to check at NASA webpage, I think they have a satelite monitor program for the Solar activity that causes aurora. I’ll dig around and see if I can find the direct link.

Beautiful.  Thanks for sharing the pictures.  Bring home the magnitude of nature.

Makes me a little homesick too.  We used to snowmachine up the back side of a mountain and watch the northern lights across the Copper River Valley.

Several people called and got me out of bed to see the lghts that night.  It was worth it.

Here are a couple of links into NASA,STEREOis the is the more visual, though I am not sure how closely it relates to near Earth phenomena. And this one is more general in nature. Sorry, NASA has recently “improved” their web services. EeHaa! Half my old links now lead down the government hole to no where.
