NFL Halts Super Bowl Church Parties

Ohhh...for heaven sakes, could the NFL get any greedier?
rolleyes

WASHINGTON — For years, as many as 200 members of Immanuel Bible Church and their friends have gathered in the church’s fellowship hall to watch the Super Bowl on its 6-foot screen. The party featured hard-hitting on the TV, plenty of food — and prayer.

But this year, Immanuel’s Super Bowl party is no more. After a crackdown by the National Football League on big-screen Super Bowl gatherings by churches, the Springfield, Va., church has sacked its event. Instead, church members will host parties in their homes.

Immanuel is among a number of churches that have been forced to use a new play book to satisfy the NFL, which said that airing games at churches on large-screen TV sets violates the NFL copyright.

Ministers are not happy.

[...]

The league bans public exhibitions of its games on TV sets or screens larger than 55 inches because smaller sets limit the audience size. The section of federal copyright law giving the NFL protection over the content of its programming exempts sports bars, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

[...]

Large Super Bowl gatherings around big-screen sets outside of homes shrink TV ratings and can affect advertising revenue, McCarthy said. “We have no objection to churches and others hosting Super Bowl parties as long as they . . . show the game on a television of the type commonly used at home,” he said. “It is a matter of copyright law.”

Will the NFL regulate or monitor all commercial establishments showing the Super Bowl on large screen TVs?

Comments

They did this last year too Anna. Several churches in my area had planned superbowl parties for their congregations and the NFL nixed them with threats of law suits. Quite a discussion on the local news radio station about it.

Frankly, I don’t understand the NFLs philosophy, they’re selling advertising time during the broadcast which requires viewers to be cost effective. Without the church social gathering most of the families that would view the ads as a group of families at church would be reduced to an individual or two at home. Not to mention it’s less likely a bunch of drunks are going to leave church after the superbowl party to drive home. But then Anheiser Busch (sp?, I prefer Molson) is one of their biggest sponsors.

How pathetic can the NFL get?

If you ask me it’s greed out of control or just the lawyers trying to bill the NFL with more hours for their services.

What’s next? All remote controls in the USA are to be deactivated during Super Bowl so no zapping or muting occurs during it’s transmission?

The NFL is probably worried some Nielson survey family will not be home with their set turned on.
This would lower the games ratings and adv revenue. Probably turns people who would not normally watch
into viewers.

The true Arc of the Covenant is the expanded, improved, all encompassing, universal copyright.

Hallowed be it’s enforcement.

I am not a huge football fan so “SuperBowl” is not a special day for me.  BUT....if my church was throwing a game day party and friends would be there, I would go and watch, thus being exposed to those all important commercials!
I can safely say there are others like me.  Only interested if we have other people around to share it with.  They are gaining viewers, not losing them.

When Mike Huckabee is President, he will put an end to this.  Chuck Norris will bust some effing heads over this kind of thing.  Ted Nugent will bring the bow and they will go all Ray Lewis… Pac Man Jones… Ray Carruth on Roger Goddell’s ass.

Mike Huckabee and Pat Robertson have a conference call set up with Jesus to figure out how to fix this.

All they have to do is NOT call it a SuperBowl Party. That cuts the legs out from under them. Do not publicize it and they are blind and deaf to it.
