New Zealand Denies Immigration to U.K. Wife Because She’s Too Fat

NEW YORK — New Zealand immigration officials are keeping a U.K. wife from joining her husband “down under” because they say she is too fat, the Daily Mail reports.

Click here to read the full report in the Daily Mail.

British citizens Rowan Trezise, 33, and Richie Trezise, 35, are living apart as she tries desperately to shed the pounds needed to comply with New Zealand guidelines that immigrants maintain a healthy BMI, or body mass index.

BMI is a weight-height ratio that estimates percentage of body fat. The New Zealand Immigration Service requires all applicants to undergo a complete medical examination, which includes body size measures like “waist circumference.”

The regulations were supposedly put into place for budget reasons. The country’s health care system cannot afford to open its doors to overweight immigrants, a spokesman for New Zealand’s Fight the Obesity Epidemic explained to the Daily Mail.

Over half of New Zealand adults and nearly one-third of New Zealand children are already overweight or obese, according to the group. Those figures are expected to rise, as are the health problems associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Richie Trezise managed to trim two inches off his waistline, the Daily Mail reports, bringing his BMI down and allowing him to take the first step toward the couple’s dream of resettling in New Zealand.

Rowan Trezise is alone at home and still struggling.

In an interview with the paper, Richie Trezise admitted his wife is having trouble losing the weight — a difficulty which may force the couple to abandon their overseas plans and stay in the U.K. for good.

They’ve set Christmas as their deadline.

Just another consequence of govt-run healthcare.

The Body Mass Index is complete garbage.  It’s based on an arbitrary weight/height ratio that’s completely unrealistic for a lot of people.  It simply doesn’t take into account differing body types.  Tom Cruise is considered overweight according to the BMI.

There are better tests to determine obesity (like the “fat pinch” test).

And the fact the New Zealand partly bases their immigration on obesity smacks of Eugenics.  Concerns over healthcare costs are moot.  If socialized medicine can’t even absorb the costs associated with obesity, then it isn’t worth a damn.

go down to the county hospital and watch all the fat fuckers griping about having to pay a buck for their meds that you, me, and everyone else pays for and you’ll be “smacking of eugenics” too!
i have no sympathy for fat people. its their own choice. the government, furthermore, can make whatever rules they want… if you don’t like them, don’t live there. that is what these ‘fatties’ are deciding. there’s nothing wrong with that. new zealand is not forcing anyone to get thin.

Well, we know that immigration is, in at least one country, taking note of the likely costs of immigration.  There’s at least something going on right here.

But that said, certainly this also demonstrates the hazards of letting big government (or big anything) anywhere near your doctor.

lol! that would NEVER happen in the US.  Maybe what New Zealand is doing to that poor woman will affect the way US travelers spend their cash “down under”.  Think I would EVER go to a country that discriminates unfairly like that?  what do they do with their population that is of “normal bmi” and has diabetes? or high blood pressure? or cancer??? or???? do they DEPORT them?  Way to go New Zealand!  just goes to show you why you are are NOT a democracy.

Thanks for the support, Anna.  I couldn’t make sense of her comment.  I must say that moving halfway around the world just to get away from your wife seems a bit farfetched, but who knows?  At any rate, there’s nothing in the article to indicate that.

LOL…

New Zealanders were ranked a troubling 17th as the world’s most obese people – fatter than our Australian cousins and the British, Canadians and Fijians, and gaining on Americans. Overall, 68 per cent of our people were classed as obese by a World Health Organization assessment, based on body mass index measurements – a controversial gauge, and a level double that estimated by the Ministry of Health.

"estimated”; always a key word in such reports.  Who says the estimates are anywhere near accurate?
