MOVIE REVEIW QUANTUM OF SOLACE

Friday night I joined zillions of others to see the new James Bond Movie.

I had seen the trailers and it looked pretty exciting.

So I anted up my bucks and joined the crowd for the 8:10PM showing.

Here’s what I saw (warning plot spoiler follows)

Driving fast, chase scene, crashing, people die, driving faster machine guns crashing, fast driving.

Secret meetings.  Shooting.  Lots of people dead.

Chase, running jumping shooting, shooting running jumping.

Secret meeting.

Travel to exotic land, beautiful woman.  Running jumping shooting, driving boat fast.  Lots of machine gun fire.  All miss.  Kill lots and lots of bad guys.

More running jumping shooting.  More bad guys.  Evil corporation. Green type.  Al Gore type.

Evil.  Run jump shoot.  Classy cocktail party.  Opera.  Run jump shoot fast driving.  Crashing a lot.

Another jet ride.  New beautiful woman. Sex.

Running jumping shooting.

Lots more of the same.

Final showdown.  Run Jump shoot. Many many die.

Blow everything up. Bad guy escapes.

Left to die in desert.

Beautiful woman walks out.

Secret meeting.

End.

I love a good run jump and shoot movie as much as the next guy, but frankly this was pitiful.

Don’t bother. You already know the plot.

You ever read the James Bond novels? QoS is much closer to the original Fleming books than any of the Broccoli movies, Bond was not a happy go lucky fellow, snapping out witty oneliners as he offed the bad guys. He was deeply troubled by his profession and how his life was going.

I liked it, it had a nice beat and was easy to dance to. I give it a 9.

I have NOT read the books.  I understand Quantum was not written by Flemming.

First one.

Daniel Craig was supposed to have been better in Casino Royale.  He’s a good actor and very convincing.  I even like his angst.  So point well taken.

But, this was a plotless movie.  No twists or turns. Just full on run jump shoot crash die explode.

It had none of the real drama the earlier Bond movies did.

None of the slightly tongue in cheek stuff we came to expect.

I did a little noodling about the net, I see most folks who saw the movie had pretty much the same impression I did.  Like Roger Ebert.
If you have seen the movie 2H9 I would ask you about the plot, not the character as much which I liked very much.

I like to suspend my disbelief to a point, but some of this was over the top for me.

Old Tigers are more dangerous when they believe this is their last hunt.

From , “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”
Old tigers, sensing the end,
they’re at their most fierce.
And they go down fighting.

Gene, seriously. Read the Bond novellas. Then watch QoS. You will see it in an entirely different light. Most especially read Casino Royale and Veiw to a kill.

I can mail them to you if need be.

You will see James in an entirely different light. One that you will grasp at a totally different level than what is presented in the Broccoli movies. Not that they are bad. They are simply DIFFERENT from the actual stories Fleming wrote.

Gene. Me and you have had our ideological differences.

Read the Bond stories. Then let’s us talk.

This was not nearly as good as Casino Royale, which I consider to be the best Bond movie ever.  (I have a mental block that Roger Moore was ever Bond.)  Bond is much closer to the books, but it just focused too much on action and not enough on plot.
