More Than One Way To Make A Law

I got a chuckle about the earmark that was sneaked into a bill after the House of Representatives had voted to approve it and before it was sent to the President for signing. Balkinization has the story and some thoughts.

Pretty interesting indeed, Mike. But the staff claim they were correcting an error.  The interesting thing there is process for correcting an error in legislation and they decided not to use it.

Don Young is toast and will soon be out as a representative from Alaska.  And so will others with the scandal they have been involved in.

If he had colluded with Aronoff to profit from a redirection in funds then he should be vigorously dealt with by the senate ethics committee until at which time he may be brought up on charges. A view I also hold for a congressman from Louisiana.

On the question of separation of powers: Normally this constitutional provision allows only the separate branches to police themselves, in this case two-thirds of the house could expel Rep. Young. But it may give rise to the appearance of impropriety if (without a thorough investigation) action is taken against a minority colleague when a majority member, W.J. Jefferson has been allowed to continue serving while allegedly committing an equally despicable act. Thus Reid and Pelosi invoked SOP’s intending only to placate the ambitions of some of the more ardent members of congress.

By the way, what was Lederman’s view on the Jefferson controversy?

The folly of granting government so much tax money and control is exposed and all you can do is chuckle.

No wonder you support socialized health care. You don’t recognize government’s glaring flaws even when it is right in front of you. And it’s not as if these earmarks and chicanery associated with them are rare occurrences. By contrast, it would be hard to keep up with all of the thousands of unrelated-to-the-bill earmarks each major spending bill gets along with the shisty ways that they get inserted.

Sure, let’s give the government control, then we can have 2nd rate health care just like in Canada.

Are you chuckling, Mike? This shit is just funny. Hardee-har-har! Let’s laugh together. I’ll join you for a brief moment.

But seriously, I’ll see you in America when you get sick. We know that you guys up there in the north have trouble taking care of yourselves. Your bigger and smarter brother to the south will be here to help you defend yourself and to wipe your bloody noses when you get hurt. It’s a thankless task, watching over our somewhat retarded brother to the north, but someone has to do it.
