“McCain Will Be the Republican Nominee” -Rich Galen

I have made several references over the last couple of years to Rich Galen, until recently a paid adviser to Fred Thompson and author of the tri-weekly*  cyber-column Mullings.

I don’t always agree with him, but he is a very savvy individual who writes with both wit and flair. (Kinda reminds me of someone…)
He is a “must read” for me for both entertainment and information.
Rich’s column on Friday bears directly on the discussion of what to do about maverick, war hero, John McCain. I’d like to share a little bit of it…

I am now persuaded that Sen. John McCain will be the Republican nominee. I am neither rooting for nor against him, but that is the way it appears to me.

Having written that, let me remind you that just the other day I pointed out that when making these kinds of predictions I am correct precisely 50% of the time.

I gave a speech to a group of donors to the Republican National Committee the other night and told them that the perfect candidate - if there ever was one - no longer existed and they were going to have to get in behind whomever ends up with the nomination.

Mitt Romney will do the right thing and stand aside sometime next week leaving John McCain, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul as the only three candidates still standing.

Ron Paul is and has been a fringe candidate from the get-go and Mike Huckabee hasn’t won anything since Iowa.

Then he gives an interesting take on Huckabee in a “sidebar”:

Here’s a conundrum: Conventional wisdom has it that Huckabee is staying in the race to take Conservative votes from Romney.

If that is true, then taking votes from Romney helps McCain.

If McCain is loathed by Conservatives then why would the Conservative Huckabee be trying to help him?

There’s more! Read the whole thing at mullings.com
