Letters to editor harder to write with head up own ass

Yes, this is a real letter to the editor to a Canadian newspaper.

“Gen. Hillier’s proposal to disregard the education and talents of new and potential recruits by forcing them into front-line combat roles in Afghanistan for two years before allowing them the privilege to proceed to the professions they applied for, changes the perspective potential recruits will have of the military as an employer. ”

You’ll have to click here to read the stupid rest.

You don’t think that would dissuade some potentially useful recruits? What’s your angle?

I don’t find the letter stupid so much as a commentary on our times. I know that the Canadian military has played up the “get an education on us” angle in past advertising campaigns and I’m sure that’s true in the States as well. The difference between now and then is that the Canadian military is actually fighting right now...it was always a possibility but it seemed a good gamble in years gone by...times have changed is all.

My angle is that I think it’s absurd for someone to be upset about how military recruits are being used… when that use is actually fighting a war.

It does seem pretty dumb that someone is complaining about soldiers being used for duty they volunteered for.

The person is bitching about how Canada is using engineers as footsoldiers. That is stupid. Furthermore he is bitching about how they sell recruitment with education and the ability to use your skills when they just put you in the foxholes.

The moron who wrote this letter clearly assumes that a nation’s military forces are not to be used for military purposes, but as a government sponsored agent of educational and social change instead… not to mention an employer of last resort.

Now that IS stupid.

I couldn’t disagree more, Sparkie.  The Canadian military trains some soldiers to be engineers.  Not vise-versa.

If the military sells something as being something that it isn’t then that’s misleading. I think that is the complaint.

Right but that’s simular to the “hot coffee” theory.

“You didn’t tell me that the coffee was hot.”
“Yeah, well it is coffee.”

“You didn’t tell me that we might have to fight.”
“Yeah, but you signed up to be a soldier.”

Sparkie ... It’s sufficient to say that the kid expects a free ride.  Canada produces some of the finest engineers in the world, and, yes, engineers are required in the military.  That isn’t to say that they wouldn’t be called on to, say ... spec. a bridge or two in some war torn country.  The letter defies logic.

Don’t want to go to war? Then do not VOLUNTEER to join the military.

How hard is that to figure out? If you are that stupid I do not want you being an engineer, or a doctor. Hell, you are that stupid I don’t want you running a cashregister or tending bar.

If you are this stupid, I would really prefer that you slit your throat and spare all of us your fucking stupidity.
