Let’s Hear it For the Election…In Cuba!

The Main Stream Media is really enthused about the upcoming election...in Cuba! Only one small problem…

HAVANA - There is no mudslinging or million-dollar war chest. No party nominations, dirty tricks or battles for key endorsements.

In fact, there’s no campaigning at all — and the most famous candidate, Fidel Castro, hasn’t been seen in public for almost 18 months.

Still, more than 90 percent of voters are expected to turn out Sunday for parliamentary elections — a key step in determining whether the ailing Castro remains as head of state.

Wow! 90% plus turnout, no dirty tricks, no “mudslinging”...sounds like paradise, right? (A worker’s paradise, maybe!)

Cuba’s 8.4 million voters are given a list of candidates — just one per post — and are strongly encouraged to check a single box supporting all of them. If they do not like one candidate or another, they can mark individual boxes next to names and leave others blank.

Everything you could want in an election except choice! Want to vote for president? You get your choice of one!

One candidate for each post...all from the same political party! And you are strongly encouraged to vote for all of them at once (for your voting convenience, no doubt!) And these people are supported by people who call themselves “Pro-choice” ?????

Yeah! Right!

Now if we could only get the MSM to get excited about democracy!

You seem unaware that the real democracy takes places with the neighborhood-level nomination process well before the actual elections. This is when anyone can nominate their neighbors and candidates are discussed and vetted. 50% of all candidates are nominated this way. The other 50% are nominated by mass organizations such as women, farmers or unions. You and I can disagree with it, but the majority people in Cuba showed again that they overwhelmingly find it satisfactory. Not only did 96% of people vote, but 91% voted for the “united slate.” Only a small percent followed the Miami and dissident backed option of spoiling the ballot or leaving it blank. If they think the system is a sham, why would so many vote the way the Government wanted (united slate) behind closed doors??

The new Cuban Parliment will be two-thirds freshman, the majority under 50 and 43% women. All major religions are represented, as are workers, students, ect. Compare that to the US Senate, where most are millionaires, most are lawyers, most are men, most are old and most are favored by corporate interests.

Hokey Smokes! I never dreamed that anyone would try to defend the Cuban non-elections!
av2ts: You seem to be unaware that there IS NO real democracy in Cuba.
But, thanks for playing!
Oh, and anytime you want to defend real censorship, real political oppression and real book burning in Cuba, come back and we’ll talk!

You can just declare something and hope it is true, meanwhile neglecting to address ANY of my points. So again, please explain how the US Congressional elections are more democratic than the Cuban system. Democracy means government by and for the people. We have a government by and for the major corporations. Just look at them. Look at the choices that are forced upon us. Where do these professional politicians come from. Why are they all rich?? What interests fund their campaigns?? Why can’t an ordinary person get elected?? Why are Americans so ill informed about issues that matter? Our system is beyond broken, which is why so many feel disenfranchised and don’t vote. We are given false choices and made to feel good about ourselves. We pick one millionaire over another, neither of whom has anything to do with the day to day life you and I live.

There are billions of people on this planet who will defend Cuba, it is only Americans who have been given 50 years of lies about that country, who do not get it. Cuba was elected head of the Non-Aligned Movement, is elected to the Human Rights Commission and is a long-time leader of developing countries.

Actually, you are going to have to try again as no political party has any role in the Cuban elections, whatsoever. Many of those elected are not party members at all. Membership plays no role in the nominating process for at least the popularly nominated process that chooses 50% of the Assembly, which is completely open to anyone and as demcoratic as it can be (think Athens or New England Town Hall). The other 50% are indeed chosen by mass organizations with ties to the State, but these organizations represent the vast majority of Cubans through their mass membership. It is a different system, that has many faults. But the US is in no position to lecture other coutries about demcoracy. Our system can not solve a single problem because of the way it is slanted towards the wealthy and incumbancy. What is it - 99% of Senators are re-elected. In Cuba, the figure was just 36%.

no political party has any role in the Cuban elections,

Except for the one party that rules the island with an iron fist and brooks no competition.
Reality check, av2ts: How many people risk their lives to leave Cuba and come to the United States? (excluding criminals)
How many people risk their lives to leave the United States and come to Cuba? (excluding no one).

the US is in no position to lecture other coutries (sic) about demcoracy.(sic)

As one of the few democratic countries on the planet, yes we do. Any time you think you’d be better off in a totalitarian state, just present yourself outside the minefields and barbed wire they use to keep their citizens in and tell them you want to join the worker’s paradise. I’m sure there’s room for one more! (BTW, you might want to leave your computer behind. It’s easier than having them take it away from you by force!)
