July 4th, 1826: An American Miracle

Exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died within hours of each other on July 4th, 1826.

With his dying breath, Adams is reported to have whispered, “Thomas Jefferson survives!”; a remarkable comment from his death-bed in Braintree, Mass., since Jefferson, more than 500 miles away in Monticello, VA., had died several hours earlier.

News traveled much more slowly then, so it’s really no surprise.

Hope and change, in a free world, are the private possessions of motivated individuals.

While visiting the Jefferson Memorial a few years back I told this story to my brother who had never heard it before.

It’s quite noteworthy that these two men lived so long after signing the Declaration.  I think of them as old men at the time of the signing.

Must be the old lady wigs.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.
