John Kerry: The Politics of Self Pity

Everybody get out your crying towels! John Kerry is near a microphone again… or, as James Taranto puts it: The Politics of Self Pity

WASHINGTON --A Senate hearing that began with glowing tributes to a St. Louis businessman and his qualifications to become ambassador to Belgium turned bitterly divisive Tuesday after he was criticized for supporting a controversial conservative group.
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race. The group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations against Kerry—then the Democratic presidential nominee—and charged that Kerry did not deserve the medals he won in the Vietnam War.
“Might I ask you what your opinion is with respect to the state of American politics as regards the politics of personal destruction?” Kerry asked near the end of the hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Kerry:I assume that you believe that the truth in public life is important.

Fox: Yes, sir.,,,,

Senator Kerry, I very much respect your dedicated service to this country. I know that you were not drafted—you volunteered. You went to Vietnam. You were wounded. Highly decorated. Senator, you’re a hero. And there isn’t anybody or anything that’s going to take that away from you.

no recollection of why you gave away $50,000?

Leave it to the AP to editorialize an alleged news story.

It was seared...seared into his memory like Kerry’s magic hat!

Seeing as how the Swiftboat Vets were, you know, talking about their personal experiences with Kerry in Vietnam, I fail to see how they’re unsubstantiated.

WOOF,

It may just be beyond your comprehension, but there are people who donate that kind of money without a clear idea of who, what or why they are doing so.  Sadly, not all of those people are Republicans either.

For example, ironically, there are some who donate to all sorts of radical leftist causes with money inherited from their dead Republican spouses.

As for the use of the word “unsubstantiated,” as I recall, the Associated Press never did any sort of in-depth study of what the Swifties were actually charging regarding Senator Kerry, and the Boston Globe certainly never went out of its way to challenge anything that Kerry said.  Hell, they probably still believe the Christmas in Cambodia story… magic hat and all.

Of course, if the Boston Globe was even half the newspaper its editors like to think it is, its corporate parent, the New York Times Company, would not have had to write down its investment in the Globe by over a half billion dollars.

Unsubstantiated, if you read the book by the Swift Boat veterans you will find that Kerry was very un popular, not respected and they made many cases of why they held this opinion on this man. I think Kerry is an empty suit and this man’s nomination has nothing to do with the donation to the Swift Boat Vets.

If I was the nominee I would have told him sir, its not relevant to this nomination.

50K is not a lot of money, in terms of political campaigns.

Kerry getting Fox to call him a hero,
priceless.

WOOF,

You’re right.  $50K isn’t a great deal of money.  And as long as there isn’t a chance in hell that Kerry will ever be Commander-in-Chief, I don’t much care who calls Kerry what.
