Jenny McCarthy Talks Autism

The other day while I was at the dentist’s office I had the misfortune to catch Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Pete’s interview with Larry King. They also had a so called autism doctor, one Jerry Kartzinel, join them.

After seeing most of the interview I understand now why everyone is so irate over Jenny McCarthy’s recent surfacing as an autism mom. I’m still contemplating a longer post about Jenny McCarthy’s opinions on autism but there are two things that really stuck for me in the Larry King interview.

By far the best question that Larry King asked Pete and McCarthy was if they knew any autistic adults. Both said that they didn’t know any. Here are two women purporting to know so much about autism, more than your average pediatrician who they repeatedly claimed didn’t know how to help autistic children, who have never met any autistic adults. They are claiming to know how to “heal” autism and “recover” children from autism. They are even claiming to know what causes autism, but they don’t know ANY autistic adults. Pete, despite confessing that she didn’t know any autistic adults, claimed that there as nothing for autistic adults in the way of housing and jobs. How on earth would she know if she doesn’t know any autistic adults?

Larry King mentioned a survey of CNN viewers asking if they knew anyone with autism. Apparently 74% of the respondents said that they knew someone with autism. He then made a comment about how tragically common autism has become. How tragically common it is to find scare mongering so often in what the media reports about autism. Autism is only “tragically common” if you chose to believe what DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) “doctors” and others of their ilk tell you about autism.

When will media types start talking to autistic people about autism or at least some reliable medical experts or people familiar with autism who don’t think it is a soul sucking tragedy? We do exist you know.

So, is this post an attack on Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete, or is there some point in there somewhere?

Last week when I read an article about her and her child, the first thing that caught my attention as being bizarre was when they called her an “actress”  LOL ... maybe ... possibly, one could stretch the imagination and called her a model, but actress? Nuh uh .. no way.
Just reading some of the issues she talks about clearly presents her knowledge on the topic as being quite limited and a lot of pretense drama is being spent and she is clueless of the real effects she is achieving.

they called her an “actress”

She had her own TV show for a (short) while! By this standard, even Sally Field is an actress!

By looking at your site, I see that you are making some money from being autistic.

I see two side to autism and very few people who are willing to see points of both sides.

I have a child with autism and I have to say that one of the major difficulties, in my life, in regards to autism, is dealing with the school system, doctors, and varying opinions that seem to be forced down my throat by so-called professionals and other parents, who can’t seem to agree on anything.

The biggest difficulty has been watching my child suffer.  His suffering is not imaginary.  It’s caused by his struggles to communicate and by the ignorance of the school system.

If only autism and it’s characteristics could just be celebrated . . . but unfortunately, there are things that my son has to be taught in order to make his life easier.

I don’t think Jenny McCarthy has a malicious agenda.  I think she just wants her child not to suffer and is looking for every way she can to help him.  I read her book and she does accept and celebrate his differences and uniqueness, while also trying to help him feel better - by helping him to not have seizures, to be able to communicate and learn to his full potential - as all humans want to do.

Not helping a child to learn and communicate would be neglect and abuse.

While I don’t know any adults with autism, I do know a couple of family members with Asperger’s who do have degrees and jobs but who have difficult lives on a personal level, because they seem to be taken advantage of and are manipulated by others.

My child may never be independent because he may never be able to hold a job because of aggressive behaviors.  Will he be happy to just sit at home with me and do nothing, or try to do recreational things or ask me the same questions over and over again all day.  Should I try to treat the behaviors so that he can then have a choice of jobs based on his wants and needs and skills or should I just accept the behaviors and take away all of his future choices?

I just want him to have a full, happy life.  I try to let him lead me to know what makes him happy and it seems to be that learning academics and communications skills are what makes him the happiest.  That’s when he has a smile on his face and is the least aggressive toward others.

I think a lot of people are attacking Jenny McCarthy who have taken a certain side that she doesn’t appear to be on.  I think her book is very reasonable and she’s certainly not trying to take away all existence of her child’s uniqueness.  She seems to be trying to take away his difficulties.  Seizures and not being able to communicate or understand language - these things are REAL difficulties, not just things that someone doesn’t want to accept about someone else.

This makes no sense; the rest of your comment does, though.

Sorry, clearly I should have proofread my post above for grammar and repetitiveness, before hitting the “submit” button.

I have to add something anyway.  Perhaps it’s different to be a parent of a child on the spectrum, rather than being on the spectrum.

As a parent, I look at all possibilities and try everything that I believe to be non-harmful to my child.

My child enjoys school and he enjoyed ABA when we had it.  Perhaps, he’s unique in that he wants attention all the time and through ABA he got it.

He prefers to never be left alone, it seems.  So autism isn’t always the same and so the reaction to it’s existence, by parents and others, can’t always be the same.

I’ve lost friends because I don’t do the DAN diet/protocol.

There isn’t enough support for anyone with autism because there are too many egos involved.  Well that and closed minds.

If someone doesn’t like a book written by someone else, they should just write their own and tell of their own experiences with autism.

robert108 - You’re right, that didn’t make much sense.  Not sure why I threw that in the comment.  A combative thing to say, I think.  I do believe that I have characteristics of Asperger’s myself and am not always sure why I often say things that are offensive without thinking about why I’m saying it.  No filter.

I apologize for that comment to Samantha and anyone who makes money from the advertising here.  You have every right to get paid for your work.

anon,

I don’t think Jenny McCarthy has a malicious agenda.

I agree with you 100% but at the same time I am afraid Ms. McCarthy is obviously still quite naive on some aspects of autism. Just from her public exposure she seems to be rehashing issues that come from being misinformed, in denial, needing to blame someone, or possibly she has not throughly educated herself. She will have a vast affect on others perception of autism and she needs to be very careful if she truly wants others to benefit from her notoriety

Jenny McCarthy doesn’t know any adults with autism because the rates are very different in the adult population (1 in 10000) then in the child population, where it’s 1 in 150. I don’t really see anything wrong with her saying that she doesn’t know any adults with autism. Her book is specifically geared to youth with autism.

Anne on October 1, 2007 at 09:46 am

Anne, you are speaking of the rate of diagnosis. Are there studies looking at increasing the screening and diagnosis of autism in adults? I’d love to take a look at them if you could point me to any.

Obviously I do have a problem with Jenny McCarthy and others making dire predictions about the future of autistic children when they don’t know any autistic adults. Adults with autism are quite easy to find and are more than happy to tell you about what their lives are really like. Google “autism blog” or “autism blogger” if you are interested.

You are so correct. Aspergers is connected with lots of successful people. The real thing is to be real about it. Unfortunately I am suspicious also All her research did not include the future. Self interest. Yes people get on band wagons and soap boxes today. I do not think all the new diagnosis are correct either it is the popular disease now for children like ADHD was in the past? This will only hurt the illness because accurate research will not be able to be done.
I hope that she will be able to do good in the end making sure that you meet and deal with adults who have the illness is the thing to do.

There are many GOOD ways to inform people and bring attention to autism.

Midnight In Chicago does it with their Autism Spectrum Podcasts at http://www.mic.mypodcast.com where people can hear the “Autism and Vaccines: Parts I & II” podcasts.

The podcasts quote sources which may be much more accurate than Ms. McCarthy’s opinion.

MIC also has the “Countdown to Midnight” CD that sends proceeds to reputable autism charities.

Spread the word. It is important we get the FACTS out on autism.
