Is Fred Thompson Soft On Islamic Terrorism?

Some of the glitter may have worn off of Fred Thompson respectibility when he selected Spencer Abraham for his campaign manager.  Debbie Schlussel certainly thinks so as she wrote in Jihad Spence: Fred Thompson’s Pan-Islamist Campaign Manager

He hasn’t entered the Presidential race yet, but Fred Thompson, yesterday, showed us why he’s the scariest Republican Presidential candidate. And maybe the scariest of both parties.

Don’t believe Thompson’s claim that he understands the Islamist jihadist threat to America. His announcement, yesterday, of his choice of Spencer Abraham as campaign manager, told us everything we need to know. Although Abraham, of Lebanese descent, is a Christian, he is a career water carrier for Islamists of the most extremist stripe and made that the cornerstone of his failed, one-term Senate career and equally lousy tenure as Energy Secretary.

As a conservative--but more important, as an American concerned about the future of this country in the face of a terrorist threat--Thompson’s choice of Spencer Abraham was the final nail in the coffin for me in opposing Fred Thompson’s quest for the White House.

I know Spencer Abraham. He wrote one of my recommendations for law school. And the Spencer Abraham that I and all of America have since experienced is bad news for everyone except CAIR, ADC, MPAC, ISNA, and all Islamists who want to endanger America.

While Abraham was a senator he opposed almost all measures critical of Islamists and measures related to security against Islamic terrorists.

As a Senator, he took marching orders from James Zogby of the pan-Islamist Arab American Institute, opposing profiling of Arabs, the use of secret evidence against Muslims (at the behest of Muslim groups), attempting to repeal the Clinton counterterrorism package, refusing to fund computer tracking of student and other foreign aliens, giving millions in our tax money right to Hezbollah, and putting CAIR on the map on Capitol Hill (taking the group’s officials around to meet other Senators and Members of Congress). He took campaign contributions from the relatives of Hezbollah-backed top Lebanese officials after he got the group millions in our tax money.

Spence was one of only two Senators in the entire U.S. Senate who refused to sign a letter calling on President Clinton to condemn Palestinian terrorism and Yasser Arafat. This was at the height of a series of homicide bombings in Israel in 1999 and 2000.

This selection of an obvious Islamic lackey puts a big question mark on Thompsons presidential candidacy.

Giuliani is starting to look pretty good.

Instead of relying on innuendo about a guy who will be a minor part of Thompson’s campaign, why not listen to what Thompson actually has to say about terrorism?

Unfortunately, Rob, actions sometime speak louder than words.  I would be interested to hear why Thompson selected this man.  I don’t think that the selection of a man who is an Islamic sympathizer will help his campaign.

Spencer Abraham isn’t even Thompson’s campaign manager.  He’s a campaign adviser.  Which isn’t exactly like appointing the guy Sec. of Defense.

Further, this is coming from Debbie Schlussel, who isn’t exactly the most dispassionate of commentators.  Read this run-in she’s had with the blogosphere in the past.

This is much ado about nothing.  What reason do we have to disbelieve Thompson’s statements about the war on terror?  His picking of Abraham as a campaign adviser?

Please.

Seems fairly straight forward. Abraham has a well documented history of support for Islam over America and western society. Fred has certainly laid his dick on the table to be smacked. Not too smart.

Rob, here is what has to say about Spencer Abraham.

In my 2002 book Invasion (p. 71, 76), I noted the open-borders obstructionism of former Sen. Spencer Abraham (R-Michigan), who fought to block the implementation of two different tracking databases–one for foreign student visa holders and the other for all temporary visitors (which was mandated by Section 110 of the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act). Abraham led efforts to starve the first database of funding and crusaded several times to kill Section 110 altogether. On September 11, 2001, neither of those databases was in place. To this day, they remain incomplete.

Bad, bad move. If the Fred campaign is trying to win over grass-roots conservatives, this is a dumb way to do it.

That Abraham is soft on immigration is brought out in Wikipedia.

Abraham was a consistent advocate of large-scale immigration and worked relentlessly to lessen immigration controls and regulations. In 1997 he received the “Defender of the Melting Pot” award from the National Council of La Raza

From is this quote

Fred Thompson has been my favorite for President in the 2008 election, until now. If what I’m hearing about Spencer Abraham, Thompson’s new campaign manager, then Fred’s campaign is dead in the water. Spencer Abraham, according to reports, is a supporter of open borders. That by itself is enough to turn most conservative voters off. On top of the border security question, I’m hearing that Spencer Abraham is an apologist for the Islamists. No way Fred can get elected if this is true. No way in hell.

There is no doubt in my mind that this action of Thompson to enlist Abraham raises a red flag which will affect his chances of being the Republican nominee.

I think it raises a red flag, sure, but to write off his candidacy because a campaign adviser, who is there for election strategy not to inform Thompson’s policies, takes some positions you don’t like?

C’mon.  Be reasonable.

I think picking Abraham was a mistake too, but I’m not going to judge Thompson’s positions based on Abraham’s.

Because of one campaign adviser. On the other hand, think of the cadres of campaign advisers to Obama, Hillary and the rest of the asylum who might provide your alternative!

I’ll wait and see.

Geez, Rob, I can’t see anywhere in my postings that I said that I was writing off his candidacy.  I only posted this because I sort of like the guy and I hated to see him do something that could negatively affect his campaign.

Fair enough, but people like DS and Malkin (I don’t like DS, I like Malkin) tend to get a little carried away with this stuff.

I’m sorry I implied that you were writing Thompson off.  I just don’t want anyone to write him off, because he’s the best candidate in the race.  Abraham or no Abraham.

Rob, Abraham has been in bed with CAIR since it hit the big time. He has repeatedly obstructed US efforts to destroy Islamic terror groups. His publicly stated positions are for compromise and appeasement with terrorists. Has he altered those positions? Not that I have heard.

Don’t know how you feel about numbersUSA, here, is a quick rundown on his Senate time.

It was a major blunder to associate his campaign with this individual, and I hope Thompson does not get burned to badly from it.

I agree that it was a mistake, but again Abraham wasn’t brought on to inform policy.  He was brought on for political strategy advice.

That bringing him on in the first place was bad politics is just plain ironic.
