Iraq Gov. Sets up Media Monitor After AP Uses Bogus Source

Posted by Greg Sheffield on NewsBusters:

The Iraq government has set up an agency to monitor false news coming out of Iraq. After the Associated Press used a government source that doesn’t exist, the government wants to make sure the AP and other media outlets cannot get away with similar fraudulent activity. Reports the UK Guardian.

Iraq’s interior ministry has formed a press monitoring unit in response to what it described as “fabricated and false news” that misrepresents the country’s security situation.

Singling out the Associated Press for criticism, spokesman Brigadier General Abdul-Karim Khalaf said yesterday that dedicated unit would monitor news coverage and even initiate legal action if journalists do not correct stories it believes to be incorrect.

“Fabricated and false news hurts and gives the Iraqis a wrong picture that the security situation is very bad, when the facts are totally different,” he said.

He added that the media should consult the ministry’s large public relations department staff for “real, true news”.

Brig Gen Khalaf referred to an AP story last week describing an attack on a mosque in north-west Baghdad in which six Sunni Muslims were burnt to death.

He said the ministry said it had no records of a Captain Jamil Hussein who had been quoted in the story, and that someone dressed in the ministry’s uniform may have given a false name to the reporter in exchange for money.

He also said the ministry had found no evidence of the attack or witnesses.

The ministry’ was backed up by the public affairs department of the US military who demanded that the AP’s story be retracted.

You might think this would shut up the lying lefties, but it probably won’t.  This is one of the answers to those who ask how we can trust what we read and hear in the MSM:  We can’t.  It requires independent verification(or debunking).

So, is Bagdhad Bob coming out of retirement?  Can’t wait!

Puzzlefeet on December 2, 2006 at 08:12 pm

Oh and I believe that Rummy wanted to beef up the MOI since it is totally dysfunctional. See leaked memo in Dec. 3 NYtimes.

Puzzlefeet on December 2, 2006 at 08:15 pm

The NYT, like the DNC, no longer has any credibility.  In war, tactics are constantly changing.  This is just more leftie spin, built on their original spin about “staying the course”, which meant not cutting and running from Iraq; it didn’t mean not changing tactics.  Lefties lie, and lie, and lie...ad infinitum.  Of course, that’s all they have.  The truth is the enemy of the left.

So, I take it the answer to my question is yes, Bagdhad Bob is coming out of retirement, R108.  R108 relying on infiltred Iraqi Ministry of Interior. LOL.

Puzzlefeet on December 3, 2006 at 05:45 am

That should read ‘infiltrated’ and please add “corrupt”.

Puzzle,

Baghdad Bob is no doubt retired now, living comfortably off his share of the Oil-for-Food billion$ scammed by Saddam and his willing partners at the UN, not to mention the “"retainers" paid out by CNN and the other leftist media for the privilege of maintaining a “presence” in pre-war Baghdad, while reporting nothing of what was really going on under Saddam’s vicious orgy of brutality.

And if “Bob” needs some extra spending money, for the Christmas holidays, for example, he can always hire on as a PR consultant to the DNC.

Speaking of not answering questions, yesterday I asked if you could provide some small bit of evidence that Democrats had actually done something to enhance this country’s security against those who are sworn to destroy us, and that what Vasko Kohlmayer said about liberals being a hindrance to our survival was “crap” as you were pleased to call it.

I’m still waiting for an answer… waiting for you to back up your flippant disparagement of Kohlmayer and those who see the left for the dangerous defeatists that you are.  But if you’re having difficulty thinking of examples of Democrat contributions to our nation’s defenses, I quite can understand.  There are a lot of us who have trouble with that one.

Bat One on December 3, 2006 at 07:07 am

P: I didn’t answer your “question” because it was irrelevant, and nonsensical to boot.  The problem of MSM dishonesty is a serious one, and I can understand both your denial and your wish to distract with some irrelevant nonsense; just don’t expect me to participate in it.

robert108 on December 3, 2006 at 07:14 am

I never expect you to participate since you obfuscate and then jump on the MSM with a report from the MOI in Iraq as justification.  You constantly question the MSM yet fail miserably to question the infiltrated MOI in Iraq.

Puzzlefeet on December 3, 2006 at 07:20 am

B1, I don’t Kohlmayer needs you to defend, I’m sure he’s more than capable of defending his tripe himself.

We are so far past being D and R on Iraq, as you refuse to see.  Even the most hawkish Republicans know that things in Iraq need to change drastically.  Bush was snubbed this week by Maliki in front of the entire world and in the Middle East, no less.  Even Rummy’s assessment admitted this as well.

So I stand by my so called “flippant disparagement” of Kolhmayer and your question is irrelevant since the Ds will be working with the Rs and the Iraq Study Group to forge a workable response to what Bush has failed to accomplish in Iraq.

Puzzlefeet on December 3, 2006 at 07:31 am

P: Do you understand the meaning of the word “irrelevant”?  That applies to your question about “Baghdad Bob”.  As far as the rest of your statement is concerned, the level of corruption(and murder) was so high during Saddam’s reign that today’s elected govt is nothing by comparison.  Furthermore, the MSM obviously needs some oversight.  Surely, even you cannot be blind to that fact.

Damn, Puzzle,

The last time we were witness to that sort of intellectually contorted wiggling and tap dancing, John Kerry was trying to explain why he voted for it before he voted against it… or some such pathetic nonsense.

What you appear to be trying to pass off as wisdom is the notion that because you are right (note: small “r") you don’t have to stoop to answer for what you say.  Now, in fairness, I wouldn’t want to try and defend the Democrats’ record on national defense either.  There IS no palpable) defense for the attempted wholesale neglect and dismemberment of our national defense and intelligence efforts by the party of the Left.

But if you are going to insist that others answer the questions that you pose, even you will have to admit that you everyone else that very same courtesy.  Don’t you agree?

Bat One on December 3, 2006 at 07:58 am

Once again, B1, You lost the election, the citizens decided your party was a complete and utter failure in protecting the United States.  The citizens want the democrats in charge, so why don’t we wait and see what happens.

Puzzlefeet on December 3, 2006 at 08:03 am

Once again Puzzle misinterprets the slightly poorer than average performance by the opposition in this midterm election with a wartime president, resulting in thin majorities in the House and Senate.

We’ll watch and see.  If the disasters that have already struck the Democratic leadership are any indication, it’s going to be rather painful to “wait and see what happens”.  Unfortunately we live in times where the decisions or lack of them really matter, so the operative term with be “painful”.

Carrick on December 3, 2006 at 08:09 am

You lost the election…

This fact has mobilized us to a greater degree than ever.  Be afraid, be very afraid, hate-filled lefties!

Puzzle,

If you would take the trouble to actually read what Kohlmayer has written, the words are not that difficult and the grammar and diction are near flawless, you would see that he never once mentions Iraq.

Apparently the idea that Iraq is but one engagement in a broader, world-wide war on radical Islamist terror is simply beyond your comprehension.  But that is precisely Kohlmayer’s point… namely that those on the Left, such as you, are willfully oblivious to the reality of the dangers we face.  And your “flippant disparagement” of his observations only validates what he is saying.

The point of asking you to actually refute his claim by listing something, anything, that the Democrats have done or plan to do to secure this nation against those sworn to destroy us, was to provide you an opportunity to prove your point.  Instead you arrogantly dismiss Kohlmayer, and change the subject to Iraq, although it’s hard to see that the Democrats have much to offer there either.

Your attempts at avoiding the responsibility for what you say and for demonstrating that you actually have facts to offer instead of childish insults is certainly understandable.  And while your contorted waffling is amusing to watch, it really does nothing to bolster your credibility.  You really need to work on that, Puzzle.

Bat One on December 3, 2006 at 08:20 am

Bat: See, this is what you get when you corner a leftie and actually call on them to provide factual answers to the questions of the day.  As you pointed out, Kohlmayer’s piece was well-written and logical; the only way to refute it would be to give specific answers to the matters he addresses that are different from what he says.  No leftie commenter has come close to doing that, which is significant.
BTW, check out “The Left Puzzle” on the reader blogs; you might find it entertaining.

...the citizens decided your party was a complete and utter failure in protecting the United States.

Puzzle,

Leaving aside the FACT that your post-election analysis is so much Donkey dross, still, it ought not to be so difficult for you to point to some sort of Democrat contribution to our nation’s defense against Islamist terror.  “Wait and see” really doesn’t sound like much of a record of accomplishment.

Is there a reason that you refuse to talk about Democrats’ past contributions and future plans for the country’s national defense and intelligence efforts against those who are our sworn enemies?  Does the glaring paucity of such accomplishments embarrass you?

This is good news.  I wonder what part Maliki had in this decision.

Puzzle:  Do you think the false stories coming out of Iraq from discredited sources are simply errors in journalistic judgment?
Or, do you honestly acknowledge the false stories have up until now, made the security situation in Iraq look worse?
If so, do you think it coincidence?

R108,

Your observation is a direct hit, Sir.

This is but one more example of just how prescient George Orwell was in his description of a leftist Democrat “paradise” where some animals, Donkeys in this case, are more equal than the rest.

It is perfectly acceptable for Puzzle to flippantly disparage those who point to the irrationality of her point of view, and to snidely berate those who don’t answer HER questions.  But let someone else ask her to defend her stated opinions with facts, or to answer THEIR questions, and suddenly its time to change the subject and offer up an array of arrogant excuses for not subjecting herself to the same presumptions that she would place on others.

I just love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning!

Puzzle,

There is one more point to be made about your non-response response,

...the citizens decided your party was a complete and utter failure in protecting the United States.

I find it extraordinary that you use the word “citizens,” thus indicating that you have at least some vague understanding of the concept of citizenship, and the difference between those who are citizens and those who are merely here.

You can be sure that the next time some leftist Democrat starts talking about “enlarging the franchise” and working to see that even the illegal population has “a say in our nations affairs” you will be reminded that that there is a distinction between those who are citizens and those who are not.  It will be an exquisite pleasure pointing out your rhetorical indiscretion to you.

Bat One on December 3, 2006 at 09:25 am

puzzledfuck, would you care to give us a list of all those terrorist attacks that have been carried out in America since 9/11? Just a quick rundown of all the utter Republican failures to defend America. Hell, I’ll make it easy, just name one.

Puzzle,

Wherever did you get the ridiculous idea that the partisan affiliation of our men and women in the military is an issue here?  One more paltry attempt at obfuscation and mental slight of hand, perhaps?

What’s at issue is the intentions of the Democrat party and its officials to once again wreak havoc on this country’s capacity to defend ourselves against those who are sworn to destroy us.  And so far, neither you, nor anyone else on the left has offered anything, even anecdotal, to suggest otherwise.

Still, your very question is an odd one, considering whose party was on record as deliberately and systematically disqualifying overseas military absentee ballots in 2000.  One man. one vote???
