Illustrating the Absurdity of Trans Fat Bans by Being Absurd

Bruce from mAss Backwards has a great analogy to illustrate the absurdity of city ordinances banning trans fats in restaurants.

Here’s the lead paragraph from the actual story.

(AP) BOSTON Massachusetts is considering following New York City’s lead and banning restaurants from serving artery-clogging artificial trans fats—a move some lovers of greasy food are giving a thumbs-down.

Now here’s Bruce with a ‘what if’.

(AP) BOSTON Massachusetts could become the first state to ban the HIV-spreading behavior of anal intercourse if a bill to be filed today wins legislative support.

Perfectly logical.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Actually, the solution to the HIV “crisis” would be to quarantine all HIV-positive people.  Don’t expect that to happen anytime soon, though, as the gay lobby is far too powerful to allow that to happen, even though it would cure the problem in one generation.  How cynical the lefties are!

On second thought, where would we get lawyers if this passed?

Though I’m not sure why “crisis” is in “scare quotes,” I agree with robert108 on this. First, because at this point people with AIDS got the disease through their own negligence; and second, it’d result in an overall decrease in suffering.

So...if a nurse or a doctor get HIV infected blood in their eye, or a policeman gets stuck with a needle while he’s searching someone, or someone gets HIV from a bad transfusion you’re gonna send them off to the leper colony?

Guys, please.

Quarantines only work when you have a disease that’s easily transmitted.  AIDS, on the other hand, more or less requires sex so rough that both partners bleed--a big reason it’s so prevalent in Africa is that people dry out the woman before commencing.  Living in the same house with someone HIV positive--even hugging and such--won’t get it for you.

What would happen here if people were quarantined is simple; they’d not get tested, and so you’d have people out there infecting more people than ever until the extent of the disease became undeniable.

Reality is as well that it’s hard enough to get homosexuals tested for AIDS already.  An acquaintance of mine from grad school was the stereotypical “flaming faggot”, and it took years of persuasion to get him to even get tested.  Sadly, part of the reason he didn’t get tested is that he was able to show me the obituaries from men he knew (perhaps also “knew"), and he knew he was pretty certain to get it, too.

And yes, he died of it not too long afterwards.  Ironically, when he knew he could no longer live the “flaming” lifestyle, his health improved until the disease took its toll.

RP: By quarantine, I meant to keep the HIV positives from being able to infect the non-HIV positive population.  You can always think of a way that something might fail, but it should be obvious that what we’re doing now, which is taking the PC approach, isn’t working.  What is your long-term solution?

The AIDS virus is also in sperm.  So the virus can infect be transferred without rough sex.

Good call, Troy.

Troy, semen (or blood) can only transmit the disease through a break in the skin and or mucus membranes.  Given that the anus is not designed for sex and produces no lubrication, it tends to tear and bleed when misused for this purpose.

R*108, there is no good easy solution, IMO.  Probably the best start would be to remind people that homosexuals, drug users, and prostitutes are about 100x to 1000x more likely to carry AIDS than the population at large--around 10% of homosexuals and a higher proportion of prostitutes and intravenous drug users.

And if someone knowingly has sex without telling the other of this condition, yes, punish them for that crime.  I just can’t see your quarantine being feasible.

Robert M. Perry on December 20, 2006 at 02:16 pm

RP: You know, I did criticize Pilgrim for his leper colony reference, which I didn’t use, but now that he has brought it up, it might be more appropriate than he realized.
Leprosy is a disease so horrible and grotesque that society saw a benefit in having a strict quarantine for it’s sufferers, who had no responsibilty in acquiring it, and who were total victims, unlike a good portion of AIDS cases, who willfully engaged in the behavior that transmits AIDS.  If we were willing to go that far to protect society from leprosy, why not AIDS?  Maybe it hasn’t gotten bad enough yet, or maybe there is a powerful lobby that has an agenda that prevents us from even considering that option.

Well, you’ve at least got the Korematsu decision to support you.  :^)

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.  But to your point, I’d consider such an option after we actually start telling young people the truth about who gets AIDS and why.  Both your and my options are...well....pretty unlikely, unfortunately.

Robert M. Perry on December 20, 2006 at 02:32 pm

It seems that without gay sex to transmit the disease it’d die out.

An epidemic occurs when one infected person infects more than one person.

Barring gay sex an infected person would statistically infect less than one person.

Whistler.  You are correct.  About 2/3rds of all these HIV/AIDS cases are caused by men having anal intercourse.  The other 1/3 is by IV drug use.  Only about 1% are between hererosexuals.  This is yet another lie that the liberals gloss over--that is, they avoid talking about the obvious.

The solution for HIV/AIDS is for a) people to stop having promiscuous sex and b) stop using intravenous drugs.

If you do those two things your chances of getting AIDS drop to near zero.

Adding to Rob’s point, the solution to murder is to get people to stop murdering other people.

I know it sounds simplistic, but with all the people out there getting up in arms over the idea of abstinence education it’s a point that needs to be made.

Dave: I put the word “crisis” in quotes because I don’t think the term is accurate, according to the percentage of the population affected, especially when compared to other medical conditions that aren’t labeled as a “crisis”.  I think it’s about extracting money by using scareology and lying about the true nature of AIDS transmission.  For instance, we were told about an upcoming heterosexual AIDS “crisis” that still hasn’t happened in the US.

I know Dave was probably being a smart aleck (and doing it well, too), but certainly a good first step to reducing social ills would be to give people accurate information on the results of their behavior.

In terms of murder, that should include mentioning the death penalty and conditions in prison.  In case of aberrant sexuality, that should include the rate at which disease and death is transmitted by certain groups--and the fact that latex doesn’t do a particularly good job at reducing the transmission rate, too.

And yes, my acquaintance probably did infect a number of other men.  (I say acquaintance because I’m not quite sure if I was his friend or bitter enemy--perhaps a little bit of both from time to time...I bore him no ill will, but he and I certainly disagreed on about everything except the Nebraska Cornhuskers)
