NASA’s Space Station Astronauts to “Swear In” Navy Sailors

NASA astronauts on the International Space Station will link up Monday, Jan. 29, with sailors on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower for a special re-enlistment ceremony. The Eisenhower is the Navy’s flagship for the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group,

The special call is set for 4:20 a.m. CST. It can be seen on NASA Television at 10:30 a.m. Aboard the space station, Expedition 14 Commander and Naval Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, assisted by his Flight Engineer and fellow Naval Commander Suni Williams, will conduct the long-distance re-enlistment of 16 sailors. At the time, the station should be flying about 220 miles above the southern Indian Ocean.

Lopez-Alegria has been in orbit since September 2006 and will return to Earth in April. Williams has been aboard the orbiting laboratory since December 2006 and will return to Earth in July. Both are graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy and Navy pilots.

Now thats one for the grandkids!

Cool stuff. You know, Hotel, that’s the kind of glorious memory that those reenlisting sailors will carry with them forever that the spinless toads on the left will never, ever know.

Pil, I was introduced, firsthand, to the tradition of re-enlistment at odd locations in 1983, in Cordillera Entre Rios, overlooking the Nicaraguan town of Plis. Swabies are particularly enamored of the odd location Re-up, Squids are down right adamant about it, given the chance.

Most grunts I ever known did not care, long as DoD got their copy.

And I want to be clear, Navy is OK, swabies is alright. I would not be walking this earth today if not for US Navy SEALS. I will go to the wall for a Squid, anywhere, anytime, anyplace. Period. Full stop.
