hunting the preferred wildlife managment tool

A story cropped up about managing urban turkeys in Bismarck with the City of Bismarck looking to provide some metro hunting opportunities to the tune of around 25 turkey permits provided by ND Game and Fish and eligible on specific city property.

District wildlife supervisor Jeb Williams said his department also has been receiving a number of complaints. Game and Fish is in full support of the shooting of the birds in the method provided by Witt.

Bismarck’s wild turkey population is manageable at this point, and allowing bow hunters to help control the number of birds is a good solution before the flock gets out of hand, and it takes a concerted effort to reduce the number of turkeys, according to Williams.

For most this is simply nothing more than the next step of urban wildlife control. But I say bully for hunters. In North Dakota we realize the safe, efficient and effective means which hunting as the preferred wildlife managment tool can be utilized. #1 it takes city leaders which understand this #2 it takes hunters to step up to the plate and say ‘yes’ we can and will help.
