The teleprompter did not break

By Jonathan Martin

The teleprompter did not break

Sarah Palin delivered a powerful speech last night, but she did not “wing it.”

Which is what Erick Erickson, citing sources close to McCain, has written on his blog, RedState.

Erickson writes that “the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Gov. Palin was in the speech.”

This claim has been picked up on Drudge and could quickly enter into the insta-mythmaking about a speech that need not be embroidered.

Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems.

Erickson writes that the same malfunction happened during Rudy Giuliani’s speech earlier in the night. Again, I watched the teleprompter during this speech, and it worked without problem. Giuliani, as is his wont, simply decided to go off-script and add some new lines, such as one attacking Obama for his “bitter” comments.

These extemporaneous comments, many of which drew huge applause, made the former New York mayor’s speech run much longer than planned. So much so that a convention planner confirms that they had to scrap a planned video ahead of Palin’s speech.

Rush made a huge deal of this on his show today, and if its not true, he really looks like an idiot again. Try a little less irrational exuberance about Palin. She is not the savior you cons are looking for.

Well that’s what Jonathan claims anyway, though one would ask whether he was monitoring it well enough to tell whether the text he saw was really what she was supposed to be reading from.  Eye witness accounts are generally considered to be one grade above make believe..

Carrick on September 4, 2008 at 04:00 pm

Well that’s what Jonathan claims anyway

Well, he was there, and he is pro GOP, so I would assume this is not bullshit, but you never know. The point is that the irrational exuberance over Palin is a bit contrived.

dragon poker on September 4, 2008 at 04:13 pm

Someone tell Carrick. Oh, wait… he’s been in here already… denying it.

Anyone who’s not a democrat say this… oh wait, nevermind.

This guy who’s denying it must be a sexist, huh Carrick?

Carrick. Heh.

Carrick on September 4, 2008 at 08:18 pm

The point is that the irrational exuberance over Palin is a bit contrived.

Not really, since it was never based on the broken teleprompter meme to start with…

I’m not accusing Jonathan of lying, just being in error by the way.  You don’t have to be partisan opposition to be mistaken.

Carrick on September 4, 2008 at 08:20 pm

You don’t have to be partisan opposition to be mistaken.

That is true. But in the case of Palin and the “broken” TelePromTer, well....you are mistaken on both counts Carrick.

Just admit it.  The hype over Palin nothing more than novelty at this stage.

Actually she was damned good, and you’re just being sour about it.

Simple as that.

Carrick on September 4, 2008 at 08:32 pm

How am I being sour?  By not getting hyped up on myths about a pre-written speech and admitting that she delivered it well?

See!  You prove my point.  Anything that is not a phony screaming review of her false works is considered bitter.  Elitist!

They are written by him.

THis is a true statement, but only if he’s in the room where his speech writers are working.....

Did the telepromter break during McCain’s speech too? No, but it had the “put everyone to sleep” button on I guess. He will be lucky if he didnt just lose half the the gains he made last night with Palin’s speech. zzzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzzz

dragon poker on September 4, 2008 at 09:19 pm

About the only thing that saves Obama where speeches and public speaking are concerned is that fact that compared to his bumbling attempts at answering tough interview questions or speaking extemporaneously, his speeches from a teleprompter are far more competently delivered.  But rRegardless of who actually writes his speeches, they are, by any reasonable measure “full of sound and fury and signifying nothing.”

I don’t think so, but I did see where he was rudely interrupted several times by tantrum-throwing upper echelon obama bundlers.

Obama writes his own speeches:

Do you feel sort of stupid now PP?  You have got to give up on this trying to catch me game.  You are going to create quite a loosing streak that way my friend.

I miss the old PP.  The guy who could make a reasonable argument once in a blue moon, and who offered up debates instead of silly one liners.

So...THe 3 guys that are claiming to be obama’s speech writers are lying?
Or are they just another un-necessary later in frivilous spending by the campaign?

Reb,

Here...let me splain it to you my friend.  I will help sharpen your attacks, because I like you.

I said Obama writes his speeches and then provided a link on how he writes his own speeches.  What you heard me say was “Obama writes all his speeches”....but I didn’t say that.

Now...about those places to eat in Houston.  Time is nearing and I will be lookin fer some good eats!

While I can be quite blunt, I sometimes need sharpening.
However, this time, I provided links on another thread that I’ll drop here, as well....
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/20/fashion/20speechwriter.html?ex=1358485200&en=4963f4fc621b4eed&ei=5124&partner=newsvine&exprod=newsvine
“...Mr. Favreau, the campaign’s 26-year-old head speechwriter, found himself in the hotel lounge with less than three hours to revise what was to have been a victory speech. What made it particularly strange was that his words were being challenged. Mrs. Clinton had helped turn her campaign around by discounting Mr. Obama’s elegant oratory, saying, “You campaign in poetry, but you govern in prose.”

“To be honest,” Mr. Favreau said, “the first time I really stopped to think about how it felt was when he started giving the speech. I looked around at the senior staff, and they were all smiling. And I looked around the room and thought, ‘This is going to be O.K.’ ”

Mr. Favreau, or Favs, as everyone calls him, looks every bit his age, with a baby face and closely shorn stubble. And he leads a team of two other young speechwriters: 26-year-old Adam Frankel, who worked with John F. Kennedy’s adviser and speechwriter Theodore C. Sorensen on his memoirs, and Ben Rhodes, who, at 30, calls himself the “elder statesman” of the group and who helped write the Iraq Study Group report as an assistant to Lee H. Hamilton...”

Now...On the dinner thing....
Check back at the old thread & grab the link to City-search.
It’ll guide you to exactly what’s in your end of town.
Drop me a line & if I’m anywhere close, I’ll drop by & share a meal!

Sarah beats Obama at his own game, public speaking, by being authentic and by stressing American values.  She doesn’t regard America as a “really mean place”, knows we need no “redeeming” and knows how to make us better, not weaker.
She scares the crap out of the lying lefties, and they are frantically spinning to destroy her, because they can’t stand up against her.  The handwriting is on the wall for the America-hating lefties, and they know it.

That explains a lot about that piece of crap, and about why Obama’s foreign policy stuff is also crap.  Very interesting.

robert108 on September 4, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Reb,

No, I hear what you are saying.  My point is i never claimed he writes “all” of his speeches, just that he writes his speeches.

Obama wrote most if not all in the early days of his career.  But now with all he needs to do, he gets some aid.

In Honolulu, we don’t have a lot of great steak houses, I was wondering if in Houston they have steaks from different types of game that people can hunt?  Just wondering.

Reb,

Ha!  Now that is what I’m talkin about!  Fried gator?  Is that even good?  Hilarious.

No worries man, dinners on me if we can connect.  I will be at a company NSM and it will be hard to break away from the team.  But we should be there at least a week.

And if we get a chance to break bread, it’s on me!
