Grand Forks Police Misconduct

When you have the power of life and death in your hands, there is no room for predjudice in your heart.

It would help if you actually proved that cops in GF are prejudiced and murdering people.

No one said that the police in Grand Forks were prejudiced or murdering people. The point I was trying to make was that people in the professions of law enforcement, firefighting and the medical field are entrusted with the health and welfare of the people they serve. They have a duty to treat everyone fairly and impartially. Many people in the aforementioned professions possess a lot of power. Some tend to abuse that power. When I first read that a young man was forced to stand out in -32 degree weather while the cops sat in their warm squad cars, it did not matter to me what his race was. I was infuriated and felt that the officers should be fired. Just think how helpless that young man must have felt. There was no reason for him to be treated that way. I have worked in law enforcement over 40 years and I know about cops and their prejudices and power trips. Maybe you should put yourself in that young man’s place and see how you would have felt.

Watashiwa, it probably would have been helpful if you’d given us some details about what happened in Grand Forks.  Not everyone (including myself) is familiar with the local issues there.

If you want us to be sympathetic that the police in GF are being prejudiced against you while murdering people you actually have to tell us about how they are prejudiced against you as they commit murder.

Here’s the story that he’s referring to.  From what I know both from the Herald and my “sources” it was pretty egregious misconduct by the police.

I don’t buy that it was racist, but it was damned stupid!

Thanks, Toot! That was my point. Can’t be all down on the Man and whatnot unless I am told what I am supposed to be down on the Man about. That whole “not being prejudiced” thing I am all hung up on, ya’ know?

Oh, watashiwa, that was not prejudice. That was blatant stupidity. And the city of GF should not have to pay for it.

To all the readers I would like to apologize. I thought that this story had gone statewide. 2Hotel9, that was not was not stupidity. I believe it was two officers on a power trip. I still stand by my statements above. When you have this power it is paramount that you are impartial. I mean the young man even asked for shelter in the police car, for Christ’s sake. You can bet that if he had moved or tried to get shelter in the car in which he had been driving or protested too loudly, he would have been arrested for failing to obey an officer or disorderly conduct. Those cops aren’t stupid. They are bullies with badges and don’t deserve a second chance. If the city of Grand Forks has to pay up, maybe they will be more careful in who they hire as officers in the future. Maybe if you had spent more time reading the article instead of coming up with this racist crap (The Man) you would have understood my meaning.

Watashiwa:  I’m surprised Rob missed it because he reads all the state’s papers (he almost always sees a GF story before I do.)

But most of the rest of the readers are out of state and wouldn’t know about it.  Now they don’t seem to mind reading about North Dakota issues, but you have to type slow for them.  smile

I agree with you that this looks like a couple of complete jackasses in uniform.  Under no circumstances do you make someone wait outside any longer than necessary.

I don’t like the idea of being stuck paying because of this, but I expect we will.  I don’t know that it’s a sign of a lack of leadership.  I think in general we have a pretty good law enforcement group around here.

you have to type slow (sic) for them.

"Slowly”. (It’s adverbial.) It means “Give the out-of-staters time to insert all the necessary corrections!” smile

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

You did not post any article. You scribbled a sentence claiming that all cops are racist murderers. I can’t help it you are stupid, just like those 2 cops.

You are right! I did not post an article. But, I also did not say that all cops are racist murders, either. If you read my reply on the blog page (You can read, can’t you?) I think you will get my drift.
I don’t know what political persuasion you claim to be. But people like you are a danger to our national security.

This,"When you have the power of life and death in your hands, there is no room for predjudice in your heart.”, is what you posted. I’m sorry you are all screwed up in the head. That is your problem, not mine.

From what I have been told by someone that is close to the department is that these two guys are probably going to not be cops much longer and they will be charged with something very simular to endangerment.

Just a question?  How does everyone know that their sources are credible?  Here’s a twisted theory - If a person chooses to do some homework they will find that the young man involved in this has had quite a criminal record and therefore could possibly be rather angered by his own past and is taking it out on the GFPD?  Also, in a situation where an officer blatantly runs through intersections while responding to a call, if that officer were to get into an accident while doing so and hurt another driver, should that officer be fired because of “stupidity”?

angeredbysenselessness on July 5, 2008 at 06:15 pm

The cop I know on the same force as this person wasn’t understanding of it at all.

If the guy is a threat handcuff him and put him in the back seat.

By the way the joke at the time on the police force was that they weren’t going to be allowed to tell someone to “freeze.”

If I remember correctly, the guy this happened to was just a bystander while his friend was being pulled over.  Also, my sources have stated that the guy was also told that he was free to leave.  It certainly would be interesting to hear all of the different accounts from everyone that was there that evening.

It’s interesting to note that your friend on the force was not understanding of this.  Funny how some people can be free of any faults.

Making someone stand outside in that kind of weather.

I also understand that they asked if they could wait in their car and were told no.

It seems to me that this goes beyond a casual mistake.
