Hooked On SAB

I discovered SayAnythingBlog exactly six months ago and have spent more time here than I can afford. My therapist calls it an addiction and says the damage to my mind and ego are not permanent.  More about that later.

I have tried to figure out what professional sport would be analogous to surfing SAB. Tennis was an early choice - the lobbing back and forth thing - but that sport is way too genteel and civil. Sifted through pro football, curling, sky diving and sumo wrestling when it finally hit me. Hockey!!

Probably the world’s fastest and most dangerous sport, hockey and SAB were a perfect match! Where else is it legal to whack someone with a stick? Body-slam? Grin toothlessly at your sprawling opponent and once in a million slaps, actually score?

And where else would otherwise intelligent, civilized folks gather to opine, debate, argue, rage, whine, display wisdom and foolishness, give and take offense, insult and flatter, drive one’s blood-pressure to near lethal levels and then go to bed?  Hell, what’s not to like?

Let’s be honest here… we all are political junkies, Rush Limbaugh and George Will wanna-be’s [my shrink calls it projection - I call it awesome...] and thwarted presidents. Our moms all said we could be one someday. Right?

Anyway, back to hockey. I’ve gotten so warped that I’ve actually assembled a team roster. Sorry I can’t include everyone , but here goes…

Coach Port:  Junk-food addict, spends a lot of time dieting. Sometimes blows the whistle and has taken the puck away when we get really bad.

Rodney Graves: Spends much of the game thinking about the game. Often scores late in the third period.

Neiman:  Gentle goal-keeper who prays that no one gets hurt. Like Pilgrim, a real saint.

Anna: Ticket-taker, but lots of people get in free because she's busy thumbing through Playgirl.

robert108:  Intense forward. Prides himself on knowing the game better than the NHL commissioner.

LaydownSally: Silver-tongued front-office manager. Doesn’t play, but analyzes everyone else’s game, while Zsa Zsa works the phones.

RealityBasedBob: No match would be complete without him, but spends most of his time in the penalty box.

BatWing: A player’s player. Odd thing though; hangs by his feet in a dark corner of the locker room.

Whistler:  good on offense, rarely gets caught by the ref when face-masking.

Hannitized: Annoying but interesting rookie, still has trouble skating.

Goon:  Born to body-slam. ‘nuff said.

2hotel9:  Frequently fined for abusive language, his stick is lethal.

Proof:  tough on offense, can slide gracefully into the wall when down.

Chief RZ:  Experienced, steady, convinced the other team is all communist.

Sparkie: Rumor has it he might be traded to the minors along with ellinas and Puzzlefeet.

Carrick:  Good player, learned the sport on Wikipedia.

DocDave:  Good in a face-off, nasty on defense.

Me:  Newbie, prefers center-ice, frequently gets caught trying to insert a new puck in the game. [along with McKracken...]

My therapist says doing stuff like this is good for me. I hope so. I’ve been taking my meds. My hands aren’t shaking so much anymore and I drink less.

I have lots more I want to say, but I gotta go. McCain is getting ready to speak. I am sooo excited!

Comments

Interesting.

Anna:...she’s busy thumbing through Playboy.

I think you meant Playgirl! I don’t think she bats for that team!

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

I must be that forgotten guy behind the scenes.

I’ve been here longer than Neiman, Anna, robert108, LayDownSally, “realitybased"bob, The Whistler, Proof, Sparkie, and almost everybody else.

I know that 2Hotel9 and I believe Rodney Graves where around before I was. Carrick came onto the scene just after I did.

And yet I’m not in the group.

Dammit!

Nice post pparets. Glad you’re here. You’re a conservative-minded one who generally tussles with every other conservative over what is, when you get right down to it, minor points of difference. This blog needed someone like that before you showed up. It keeps us on our toes.

I will have to say that I was thankful when robert108 showed up on the scene. This blog had at that time what can be charitably described as very persistent left winger regulars. Rob nor I nor anybody else who was here could effectively take on these guys.

Then robert108 showed up and evened the score a bit. He gets hell from some for his “high” post count (which makes him just like every other regular here), but his tenacity in dealing with the opposition is and was admired by me.

likwidshoe on May 19, 2008 at 10:59 am

pparets,

I’m a saint? Damn. I’ve been called a lot of things here, but that’s a first. Thanks. I think.

I agree with you, though, that this site is unique in many wyas. One of which is the Reader’s Blogs where anyone can express themselves in any way they want.

The comments, too. Find another site where those who are deliberately obnoxious or obtuse over and over again aren’t blocked. It’s sport here. Fun stuff.

That’s what got me to stick around after I stumbled on SA. Open forums is fun.

By the way, I tried commenting over at Huffungton but they quickly advised me that my comments would be held for review, or words to that effect. And they didn’t post them. Heh. Doesn’t happen here.

Now....about this “saint” thing......

Just FYI.  You can view all the folks with a member page as well as their posts via the authors sections.  I thought I was doing pretty well at 1600 or so comments.  Although about 3/4 of my total comments were lost when Rob changed the site over a year and a half ago.  I am just going to take it as an oversight that you left me off.

But do it again and I am going to start playing for the Daily Kos Moonbats in the Far Left Conference Fringe Reality League.  The FRL.  Pay isn’t nearly as good because everyone gets paid the same no matter how much they contribute and the entire team owns the team.  Only the extremely wealthy “captains” have any real say or get to make a profit, but everyone else happily rides on the team Prius while the captains fly in private jets to the games.

I found sayanyhting through friends at Gunny’s Grinder. Hey Poppa Ray and Coastiemom!!

This is definitely different from just about EVERYTHING else out here. It is not a rigidly set niche sort of blog. And you have to repeatedly, seriously piss Rob off to get banned. Most political blogs I frequent are set within narrow rails, with very little variance. And commenting at a lot of blogs is a chore, with no email notifs for threads. And don’t get me started on googleblogger! GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

Lik, I thought you predated me? Didn’t you help me with links and pics on the old page set up? The one before the one before the last change?

Good shot, Rod!

Rob, I go through cycles, especially when I am working a lot on the computer, where I hardly talk to friends offline. This is the primary blog I visit, throw in Sister Toldja, Dissident Frogman, Fileitunder, AK47.net, and Mideast Youth Forum. Thats my circle!

Plus commenting at WaPo and Powerline. Not actually in the same league as sayanything, I know.

Lik, you and Toot and Proof and docdave and Bravo1 have always helped me out of my computer illiterate logjams! And Rob has put up with my whining about things not working, when, invariably, what ever it was was my fault. Not so much, anymore, I am slowly getting hip to the deal.

There are a good many comments from me, 2Hotel9, robert108, and just about every other regular that isn’t recognized by our accounts or counted for some unknown reason. It should recognize it if the same e-mail address was used, but it doesn’t.
