Henry Miller’s Words of Wisdom

Words of wisdom from Henry Miller, taken from Tropic of Cancer:

“And so I think what a miracle it would be if this miracle which man attends to eternally should turn out to be nothing more than these two enormous turds which the faithful disciple dropped in the bidet. What if at the last moment, when the banquet table is set and the cymbals clash, there should appear suddenly, and wholly without warning, a silver platter on which even the blind could see that there is nothing more, and nothing less, than two enormous lumps of shit. That, I believe would be more miraculous than anything which man has looked forward to. It would be more miraculous than even the wildest dream because anybody could imagine the possibility but nobody ever has, and probably nobody ever will again.”

Tell us Sparkie, what wisdom is there in this?

These are very famous words Rob. They got ‘Tropic of Cancer’ banned in the US from 1930 until 1966. Also there’s a moral: Careful what you attend to eternally, it might just be a couple lumps of shit!

Sparkie: I’m not familiar with the story behind this. What made this novel so bad that the Left censored it? It seems like the sort of thing that would offend conservatives, but we all know that they support freedom of speech.

You can find a hint to why Henry Miller was banned for so long if you read a good review of Under the Roofs of Paris. See the reviews at the bottom. He wrote it for some smut guy in California for a buck a page… which is alot back then. It has about as many explicit sex acts and blasphemous words about everybody as one can fit on the page. Good stuff. Tropic of Cancer has a bit more plot though… basically its about Miller’s fictitious (or not) sex, booze, and food adventures in Paris.

Dave, are you always this trite and shallow?  Is it like a class you took or something?

Is this the guy who was bangin’ Anais Nin?

Yes. That’s the guy. If you read his Rosy Crucifixion Trilogy (Sexus,Nexus,Plexus) I know you will be impressed. Those books take place in New York at various times around the depression and are presented in unique way for first person accounts from that time period… to say the least.
