Hamas Coming Around On Israel?

Today’s Globe and Mail quotes Jimmy Carter as saying that Hamas is prepared to accept the right of Israel to “live as a neighbour next door in peace.” This would be very good news if true and once again demonstrates the importance of talking with enemies and even hugging them when circumstances warrant.

Recognising most readers’ distaste for Hamas and the even greater sense of aversion for Jimmy Carter, I expect that this news will only please about three or four of us SA regulars. Nevertheless, I’m hoping that Carter’s impressions are accurate and that Hamas will be engaged in dialogue sooner rather than later.

Mike,

If this is true it’s great news, but I’d take it with several grains of salt if I were you.

Hamas is well aware of how to manipulate the media and with the useful idiot Carter to help them that could well be what they’re doing.

Until I actually seesomething concrete from them I’m afraid I’ll have to remain a bit of a skeptic.

Good post, Mike. I have always been a big fan of President Carter. The man has much wisdom and patience, and he understands that you negotiate with your enemies, not simply attack them. To bad our current Prez. and Vice Prez. won’t try and learn from Carter.

Mike,

Is there any reason that this,

...the right of Israel to “live as a neighbour next door in peace.”

doesn’t instead read, “...the right of the state of Israel to exist as currently constituted and recognized by international law.”

Davinski - The man has much wisdom and patience, and he understands that you negotiate with your enemies...

Sure. The opening line is “we will drive the Jews into the sea!”

Start your negotiations.

To bad our current Prez. and Vice Prez. won’t try and learn from Carter.

444 days.

Wait, wrong lesson?

Its so funny that now you are interested in picking up the nuances. Perhaps that sort of comment would entail some sort of reciprocity that they just don’t see happening (your misread of the ‘ca1’ case the other day no doubt has its source in the conservative media). After all, the state system is based on reciprocity. Hamas is negotiating from a position of weakness. Let’s keep all this in mind.

B1...no idea.

Pilgrim...nothing wrong with skepticism. I’ll believe it when I see it as well but it’s encouraging news, something that’s been lacking in the Middle East these days.

"… Carter said the group promised it wouldn’t undermine Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ efforts to reach a peace deal with Israel, as long as the Palestinian people approved it in a referendum. In such a scenario, he said Hamas would not oppose a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza.

Hamas, a militant Islamic group that both the U.S. and Israel consider a terrorist organization, calls in its charter for Israel’s destruction. It has also traditionally opposed peace negotiations with the Jewish state.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, later said Carter’s comments “do not mean that Hamas is going to accept the result of the referendum.”

Like we didn’t see this one coming.

Apparently “wisdom and patience” and “talking with enemies and even hugging them” means believing the obvious bullshit that the idiot Jimmy Carter tells you.

It is a good thing that our “current Prez. and Vice Prez. won’t try and learn from Carter”. The man is a gullible idiot. Carter has nothing good in the way of diplomacy to teach anybody.

The sad thing is that MikeAdamson and Davinski will buy the next load of bullshit that comes out of Carter’s mouth. Those two will never learn. MikeAdamson will clarify that he didn’t buy into this, but that didn’t stop him from saying “once again demonstrates” as if the supposed Hamas promises were true.

Keep on hoping against reality. At least you two have that.

The only people who don’t believe in talking with the enemy are dopes...even Israel is talking to Hamas through Egypt. I understand the opinion that Carter shouldn’t be conducting ad hoc diplomacy but the folks who don’t want to talk tend to be zealots and ideologues who have no skin in the game...IMO of course.

You say “the enemy” as if they are all the same.

You don’t think that there is no talking with some enemies?

If you believe that you can talk with all enemies, then perhaps it is you who is the dopey zealot ideologue who has no skin in the game. It’s easy for you to recommend talking.

Where do you negotiate with an enemy who is not afraid to die? Where do you negotiate with an enemy who is not afraid to send his kids (real kids, not the 18 year old military “kids” of the Western world) to die?

The ideologue believes that talking with enemies is always possible. Human nature shows otherwise.

You need to wake up to some hard realities Mike...IMO of course.
