Gitmo Conditions “Better Than Civilian Prisons Worldwide”

An editorial in today’s Opinion Journal by David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey, points out that even if we closed Gitmo (and there’s no reason we should!) it would hurt the war effort and wouldn’t please the war’s irrational critics one bit!

Even European officials who have visited the American base acknowledge conditions there--including housing, food, medical care and recreation--are better than in most civilian penitentiaries around the world.

Australian al-Qaeda member David Hicks is reported to have reached an agreement with prosecutors yesterday, and pleaded guilty to a single count of supporting a terrorist organization at his hearing before the Military Commission at the Guantanamo detention facility.  Despite Hicks’ two and a half year detention, he seems to have put on quite a bit of weight.

He looked in reasonable health, although, as his father Terry said, he looked puffy.

He was unrecognisable from old photographs of him, although the extra weight has made him resemble his father.
