German Lawmakers Loosen Limits on Stem Cell Research
Summary of Article:
On Friday, German lawmakers voted to loosen restrictions on stem cell research. The new law, which passed on a vote of 346 to 228, allows scientists to import and use stem cells created before May 1, 2007. Under the old law they were allowed only to use imported stem cells created before 2002.
German researcher Oliver Brüstle said that the changes will make cooperating on international projects — especially within Europe — much easier. However, observers believe that merely changing import dates is not enough. Some believe that importing stem cells, rather than producing them in Germany, shows an unwillingness to face up to difficult issues.
The Catholic church, which has been an outspoken critic of stem cell research, expressed its concern with the decision by saying that the demands to use human embryos in general for research purposes will be greater.
