Georgian Propaganda Has US, SAB Commentators Mesmerized

Oh my god! “Mother Russia” is attacking the region where all the oil pipelines are! They are attacking the pipelines.

Local police recorded 51 strikes. “I have no doubt they wanted to target the pipeline, there is nothing else here,” said Giorgi Abrahamisvili, a policeman who witnessed the attack.

Oh my god! Too bad the pipeline isn’t in the area all of you are claiming it is! Moreover, its too bad that the pipeline, apparently hasn’t been damaged by the 50+ strikes the Georgians maintain Russia has perpetrated on it.

BP operates the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which transports one per cent of the world’s oil needs, or one million barrels a day from Azerbaijan to the Mediterranean. A spokesman played down the impact of the strike, pointing out that pumping was suspended last week because of a terrorist attack in Turkey.

“At the moment the pipeline is not running at any capacity, because there was a fire,” the spokesman said.

Hmmm. As MOFO observes

I’m sorry, but if the Russians had fired over fifty missiles at an oil pipeline, how were they unable to damage it? Are they using rubber missiles now?

BP runs the pipeline and they claim that there has been no attacks on it. Hmmm.

“We’ve seen reports attributed to a Georgian minister saying that the Russians have bombed the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline.

“We are not aware of that and I think we probably would be if it were true.”

This brings us to a salient question posed by WOOF.

[Do you t]hink the Georgians are above killing Americans to guarantee American support for the obvious lost campaign of illegal aggression they initiated?

Hat tip to MOFO and WOOF for this one.

Sparkie,

There are those of us who are long out of our twenties who remember quite well how Russia held other nations in an iron fist.

The kids of the internet/cell phone/ipod generation haven’t a clue. To you its ancient history.

What you’re seeing isn’t the seduction of Georgian propaganda - it’s a reaction to Russia acting like it did just two generations ago.

Scary stuff....if you’ve been on eath long enough to wear out a couple of pairs of jeans.

Sparkie’s strawman is the idea that people who are condemning Russia’s use of Georgia’s stupidity as a pretense for invasion are saying that the Georgians have done nothing wrong.

Which is, of course, exactly the sort of stupidity you expect from someone like Sparkie.

sparkless-arse-fuckin-buckle,

Should we really require a baseless, or more accurately, counter factual, “opinion” which reeks of excrement we’ll send someone along to collect you with a shovel.

1) The Russian cyber-war campaign kicked off over a month ago.

2) The Russian armed forces amassed a logistics base across the Caucases from Georgia (in an area of few roads, no rail roads, and no navigable rivers) sufficient to support a corps level offensive.  Doing so requires months of planning and preperation.

This is the bear of old serving notice on the other break away former republics that they dare not stray too far.

Russia has us in an interesting position!

I linked above… Bat One lying about the location of the pipeline to argue for us going in. He was invoking “Mother Russia”. When we slurp up propaganda, blatant propaganda at that, and bray about it and argue to the effect of “we need to punish russia"… we stand to loose many allies. Georgia provided good momentum for this mess by shooting civs. Now we are defending them and they continue to shoot civs. There are bogus reports of Russia’s activities being trumpeted in order to rationalize our actions. The pipeline jive talk is a farce. The owners of the pipeline have testified to that. Not only is it not in the region some of you have been claiming it is, its not been attacked by Russians. It was attacked last week in Turkey.

We stand to loose huge amounts of credibility with allies and potential allies alike. Short from rallying NATO, I think this will have a negative effect as NATO has many Euro countries in it who aren’t taken by the propaganda.

We need to not be rash. We need to be clearheaded and calculated. Both sides are in the wrong. Russia also has a very good angle to undermine us significantly in the International sphere. I know we, as Americans, shouldn’t worry about foreign opinion (or so you argue), but anyone who has feelings about geo-ethics and so on… knows of at least the pragmatic value of good allies.

It’s now illegal aggression for Georgia to have troops on its own territory?  Say what?

Let’s help you out, Sparkless.  The “aggressor” is generally the country with its troops on another nation’s soil.  Got it?  In this case, it would be called “Russia.”

Now certainly national boundaries are a little bit trickier hundreds of years after the Czars (followed by the Bolsheviks) settled ethnic Russians in all of their territories.  Certainly human rights issues aren’t “easy” when you’ve got centuries-old ethnic hatreds incited in part by the Russian colonization, either.

That said, unless Russia can clearly demonstrate widespread abuses there, methinks they need to be on THEIR side of the line, and the world is right to condemn RUSSIA for their aggression.

geo-ethics

??

What exactly are geo-ethics?

Is this yet more philo-babble, psycho-babble, socio-babble that we are supposed to adhere to while trying to deal with the daily events in our lives and that of our nation?

Do you, Arbuckle, deal in anything except such arcane, esoteric systems which you believe give you a leg-up on us po’ folk?

Scary stuff....

Yea, I know. You should check out all the mass guilt and historical vitriol that Hitler used to his advantage in between the first two world wars. Or Milosevic, for that matter. Condemning entire societies, races, peoples because of the posturing of their outmoded leaders is very scary. (As I have argued with respect to Iran.) Pride, which we all fight to have, in one way or another, can be manipulated in very scary ways.

your people are the geo-ethicists. i get that from ‘geo’ as in WORLD and ‘ethics’ as in GOOD/BAD. that’s hardly arcane. were you not familiar with those words? projection?

In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions to others. Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

Rob and r108 have both previously referred to Ockham’s razor (albeit by the other spelling, as we all know). Rob also names fallacies by their latin names from time to time. Does that make them elitists? At one point, I provided the etymology of “Ockham’s razor” because r108 was accusing me of spelling it wrong. You got nothing, bro.

Yet another useless insulting post by sparkless.  To summarize your post, everyone who comments at SAB except your enlighten self has succumbed to Georgian probaganda as you become a tool of Russian propaganda.  Unlike you, many of us lived through post WWII and know how the Russians operate and are not to be trusted in almost anything.  You are the fool here for not understanding that.

Sparkie, my friend, you are quite nearly as delusional that “progressive” surfer dude who stupidly envisions himself some sort of Master of the Rhetorical Universe.

Please point out to me where I have lied about the specific location of the pipeline, and where I have advocated that the US should militarily intervene… if that’s what you meant by “going in.”

etymology !!??

Not to be low-brow, but wouldn’t history have worked just as well in that sentence, Arbuckle?

word history.

Etymology is the study of the history of words — when they entered a language, from what source, and how their form and meaning have changed over time.

So, spark, are you still trying to tell us that Russia has not been working to destabilize the governments of all the former slave states? Really? It is all their own fault, because they refuse to bow down to Russia and the mafiosi? Really? That is your entire point, that all the former slaves must submit. To resist is an act of “aggression” against the innocent, pure of heart and benevolent Russian government?

Keep telling yourself that lie. You might actually convince you.
