Gas Station To Offer ‘Terror-Free’ Oil

Article here

February Grand Opening Planned

OMAHA, Neb.—Area drivers will soon be able to fill up with gasoline made from “terror-free oil.”

KETV in Omaha reports that a gas station is about to open near 129th and Q streets named Terror Free Oil, and the idea is to offer consumers petroleum products from countries that do not sponsor terror.

The gas station is associated with the Terror-Free Oil Initiative. The group’s objective is to encourage Americans to buy gasoline that originated from countries that do not export or finance terrorism. A representative said that Omaha’s will be the first of several terror-free oil gas stations to open across the country.

“The terror-free oil initiative is dedicated to encouraging Americans to buy gasoline that originated from countries that do not export or finance terrorism,” according to the group’s Web site.

Chris Decker, professor of economics with the University of Nebraska-Omaha, said the idea may make for good marketing.

“From a business perspective, it’s kind of a neat way to differentiate yourself from the competition. To me, that sounds an awful lot like what we in environmental economics refer to as eco-labeling. Like, when you purchase a can of tuna with a symbol that there was no harm to dolphins to catch the tuna,” Decker said.

Will drivers make a special trip? Mary Ann Buscher said the station got her attention, with its bright red, white and blue advertising, but she isn’t sure when or if she’ll stop there.

“I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there, probably. No, I wouldn’t,” she said.

The grand opening is Feb. 12.

Market forces strike again. This method, rather than any “pie in the sky” alternative fuel schemes, is probably the way to go. Don’t you just love the free market?

I wonder if the fuel at this station is going to be able to compete with fuel at other station’s price wise.

Rob: How this will play out is anyone’s guess, but that’s the nature of innovation in the market, isn’t it?  I would like to see this catch on; it would probably be one of our best economic weapons in the war against the terrorists.  Price is always relative to value, and the value of extending a middle finger to the terrorists may be valuable enough for some to justify some extra expense.  At $2 a gallon, a ten cent increase per gallon is only a 5% penalty.

I’d go there… I don’t understand the business well enough to know how they can be certain of the origin of their fuel, but I’d probably take the hook.

“Hope is not a method.” - Common Military Saying

The above is a statement of pro activity.  If any Soldier were to tell me that he hoped what he was briefing was going to come to fruition, that would be unacceptable.  We in the Army do not have the luxury to ‘hope’ that things will end well.  Hope will get us killed.  Instead, we must plan and take action.  Hope is not a method.

As a leader I can never ‘hope’ that my Soldiers have the proper training.  I can never ‘hope’ that my Soldiers have the proper logistical supplies.  I can never ‘hope’ that my Soldiers will survive the next mission.  Hope is not a method; I live in the real world.

I’d shop there as well and would be willing to pay a reasonable premium for the peace of mind in knowing that my money is funding Chavez or the crazies in Iran.

That said, I wonder how many other people would be willing to pay even a 5% penalty on their fuel?

You know what would be a good idea is to sign the military up to get their fuel from a supplier like this.  That would have a massive impact, and we as taxpayers could agree that fuel expenses for the military would be a little more.  Something that’s worth it if we can pull some economic levers on Iran/Chavez, etc.

Great idea, Rob!  For national defense reasons, our entire govt should use only gas made from terror-free oil.  After all, we are fighting the terrorists, aren’t we?

There is no such thing as “Terror Free Oil” in the U.S. using Kaufman’s description (no ME oil). Sinclair denied their request to use their name on their stations because they buy oil from the NYMEX which means oil that can come from anywhere.

Further, there are only a few pipelines in this country that all companies use pre and post refinery which means oil and gas from anywhere can “mingle” in these pipelines.

OA: Actually, we buy almost all our oil from Canada, Saudi and Mexico, in that order.  None of them are terrorist countries.  The most prominent terrorist oil producer, Iran, contributes nothing to our oil supply.  So, in fact most of our gasoline is made from terror free oil.
