From The Department Of Redundancy Department

The ACLU is at it again. They’re suing the Rhode Island State Police for detaining illegal immigrants - in this case Guatamalens - after a traffic stop. This from the Rhode Island News:

ACLU sues state police

PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union yesterday filed a federal lawsuit against the state police, alleging racial profiling and violation of the constitutional rights of 14 Guatemalan nationals during a July traffic stop that led to their detention by immigration officials.

Steven Brown, director of the Rhode Island affiliate, yesterday noted the unusual nature of the lawsuit filed by ACLU volunteer attorney V. Edward Formisano.

“It’s very rare for individuals like these plaintiffs to be willing to step forward and challenge questionable police practices that they’ve been subject to,” said Brown.

“The citizenship status of the plaintiffs is really irrelevant to this lawsuit. These were individuals who were in a van that was stopped for a minor traffic violation. The question is whether police have a right to detain individuals for no other reason than the way they look …”

Said Brown, “The law generally prohibits racial profiling on the highways. It prohibits stopping or searching vehicles based on the person’s race or ethnicity, all of which we think were present in this case. It also specifically bars police officers from detaining individuals in cars longer than necessary to address the initial traffic violation. From our perspective, that restriction was clearly violated in this case.”

Drudge has the whole thing.

Can somebody tell me what in the name of the wide wide world of sports is wrong with these people?

They actually came right out and said that this was a violation of the Constitutional rights of these illegals. Here we go again. What are these people smoking?

The ACLU is a seriously deluded anti-American organization. Somewhere along the line they have decided that they have met the enemy and he is us, and they have embarked on a Quiotic quest to tilt at every American windmill they can. It looks like they won’t rest until they’ve torn the very fabric of this country to shreds.

Their claim to be a defender of the Constitution is pure bunk. They don’t want to defend it, they want to alter it to fit their idea of how things should be on the Disney Planet.

This is a dangerous organization that bullies schools, cities, religions, and anyone else that doesn’t agree with their politically correct agenda. If you’re offended by something call the ACLU.

I’m sure they’ll sympathize.

If you can get out of a DUI for not being pulled over for an appropriate reason (which you can in some places) then I can see a glimmer of an analogue here. Personally I don’t think it’ll hold up and, if it does, I suggest they just arrest them after they are done deciding they shouldn’t have been pulled over (or whatever). I doubt they are going to give them two minutes to run back into the underbrush.

Come now, Pil! Don’t you know it is illegal and icky for you as a police officer to ask for ID! How gauche. Next you will try to tell us that people are supposed to have proof of insurance and a “registration” card to operate a motor vehicle. And must be actual “citizens” of this country. How archaic of you.

There! I made it all the way through typing that without laughing.

This falls along the lines of telling cops that they are not allowed to take action when a cloud of crack funk rolls out of the window when the driver rolls it down. Or open alcohol containers in clear veiw. A bag of sticky buds lying on the dash. Copious blood stains on the front fender. You get the idea.

Y’all pretty well know where I come down on random stops/searchs. This appears to be a legit pullover. To say the officer should not have taken any action on these perpetrators is silly.

You ride around with your shit in the wind and get busted? Thats your fault.

That’s about as well put as it can be. If I’d have done stuff that stupid in my younger days I have never made it through the late sixties and early seventies unbusted.

You pile a stack of illegals in a van like sardines and you get stopped. Imagine. That’s like some of my friends back in the day who rode around with their silver pot leaf hanging from their rear view mirror and smoking a joint rolled in strawberry papers with three other dudes and a car full of smoke and then bitching because they got pulled over and “hassled.”

The ACLU is apparently stuck in time.
