Florida: Evolution a-ok, teach away

He he. Chalk one up for the godless cretins!

(TALLAHASSEE, Fla.) — Florida’s public school science standards for the first time will use the word “evolution,” although the biological concept already was being taught under code words such as “change over time.”

The new standards, part of a set of overall science changes adopted by the State Board of Education Tuesday on a 4-3 vote, require schools to spend more class time on evolution and teach it in more detail.

The standards state that evolution is “the fundamental concept underlying all of biology and is supported by multiple forms of scientific evidence.” That statement rankled opponents, some of whom had urged the board to add an academic freedom provision that would have allowed teachers to “engage students in a critical analysis of that evidence.”

Evolution supporters, including mainstream scientists and clergy, told the board the academic freedom proposal was a wedge designed to open the door for injecting religious arguments into science studies.

“We know what’s going on here,” said board member Roberto “Bobby” Martinez, a Miami lawyer. “What we have here is an effort by people to water down our standards.”

No, not watered down standards in Floreduh skuul!z How’ll all these kids make a living? After all, there can only be one pricasso.

Seriously though, thank God Florida is prancing into the late 1800s.

I don’t see the fuss in telling kids that evolution is just a theory.

It’s the truth.

The difference is between the scientific definition of theory and colloquial definition of theory.

You have a point there Lestat, but I still think that the issue is blown way out of proportion.

Lestat’s point is salient. Scientific hypotheses have a status similar to that of the folk concept of theory. Scientific theories are more like folk fact. Although I think even the idea of folk fact is undergoing a period wherein we are having watered-down standards foisted upon us.

Evolution occurs. There are countless manners in which this has been explored and it has become a fundamental concept not only in biology, but also in cognitive science and many other areas. In my mind, 1953 sealed the deal. What now interests me most now is how DNA evolved to have these various randomizations and methods of shutting off certain codes, how the rNA evolved to behave how it does, as the ‘transcriptionist’. And at what level of complexity of life in the pre-ancient world did this meta-evolution occur? Wild shit. Many questions sure do outstrip current science, but I think we can say that evolution’s putative status is not one. It happens.
Look at what’s going on with us humans right now. We seem to be removed from nature, i.e. the super(uber, over, beyond)animal, but here we are; churning out amazing diversity within our species. The other interesting question will be… what are the next round of environmental stresses to come along which certain people will have the ability to better deal with than others. What traits of humans will be lost and what will be accentuated or new when this occurs? How will this scenario end up manifesting itself in our social habits, physiognomy, thought processes, and so forth?

For me, 1953 closed the deal the other way.  Huge error correcting codes in DNA “evolved”?  Please.

And I’m with Lik, obviously, on the “theory” thing.  Until we actually observe speciations and find a few of those few million missing links, it’s a theory (almost just a hypothesis) that is missing an incredible amount of data needed to validate it.
