Film Review: S21 - The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine

I saw this film the other day and it was a bit dark, but very informative. The things that happened under the Khmer Rouge were horrendous: bleeding of victims to supply blood bank until they were emptied of their blood and they chirped like crickets when they breathed and died, torture and brutal executions, and forced biographies of false treasonous acts. They executed people by beating them in the back of the neck with a rod and then slitting their throats.

They did interviews with many guards and torturers as well as a few detainees who ended up living. The most bizarre thing was how these normal people could become so cold and ruthless. Some spoke about the US fighting in Cambodia in the early 1970s and the need for what he saw as patriotic fighters so they fought. What was interesting about it was the manner in which the US helped motivate the push for the communist government of the Khmer Rouge by invading. Moderate citizens saw an opportunity to fight for their own sovereignty. They then became indoctrinated with fear - everyone became a spy who spied on everyone but themselves.
The survivors discussed the difference between 'destroying' and 'killing'. The Khmer Rouge killed 2 million people.

Must not have thought much of it, eh?

Baloney.  We didn’t motivate the push for communist government by invading Vietnam, we emboldened the communists by invading and then not having the will to a) wage the war in a serious manner and b) complete the mission.

It was the corrupt Marxist ideology that instructed them to slaughter all the “infidels"(those who didn’t want communism).  Duh.

The film was about Cambodia and I was referring to the invasion of Cambodia. In Cambodia, according to the testimonies and first person accounts, our invasion pushed many moderate citizens to join forces with people they might not normally have buddied up to in an effort to repel the US forces.
It was also a French made film, perhaps they found some ‘buck passing’ testimonies. Also, these people did horrible things so they would probably rather name any scapegoat that comes to mind, much as the people they tortured did, rather than admit their guilt.

Rob’s comment still stands, as whenever we don’t follow through with terrorists, it emboldens them, like Clinton did with OBL and Somalia.  Don’t believe me; Osama said it.

I saw this film. I asked myself a few questions when it was over. After seeing the guards tell their horrific stories (give their confessions)...... where are the criminal trials?  Where are those watch dog human rights groups? We are still hunting and trying to deport ex Nazi guards 60+ years after the fact. In this case we have perpetrators of murder and torture confessing to crimes from 30+ years ago, and we have..... nothing. Why no public outrage over the atrocities committed in Cambodia?
I guess the poor Cambodian murder victims lost out to global warming and saving the whales......sad.
