Fewer Voters Identify as Republicans

The balance of party identification in the American electorate now favors the Democratic Party by a decidedly larger margin than in either of the two previous presidential election cycles.

In 5,566 interviews with registered voters conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press during the first two months of 2008, 36% identify themselves as Democrats, and just 27% as Republicans.

The Democratic Party has also built a substantial edge among independent voters. Of the 37% who claim no party identification, 15% lean Democratic, 10% lean Republican, and 12% have no leaning either way.

By comparison, in 2004 about equal numbers of independents leaned toward both parties. When “leaners” are combined with partisans, however, the Democratic Party now holds a 14-point advantage among voters nationwide (51% Dem/lean-Dem to 37% Rep/lean-Rep), up from a three-point advantage four years ago.

Hey Blackwaterboob,

Any particular reason you aren’t making predictions as to the results of the 2008 election given the implications of what you have posted?  Unsure of your data?  Or did you lose your balls in a cardgame to Starbuck?

The results of the elections are not odd at all when you take a look at who is McCain has working on his campaign.

The other thing is that most of the remaining people who think that they’re Republicans are not. They’re neocons.

ews48 opines:

And I’m sure that ews48 knows enough Republicans to be able to arrive at an informed opinion as to the matter… Just about like rbb’s informed opinion on “Blackwater Fever.”

As the Obomanation and the Hildebeast eviscerate each other I suppose the everyday Leftist has to cast about for some sort of distraction—any distraction—from the ongoing bloodletting.

I have a guess as to why the headline, if true, is true.

First and foremost, I don’t think I have changed all that much on the issues as time has marched on.  I want a limited, Constitutional government.  I want a legal system that reflect Middle American values and does not attack and undermine those values.  I want a fiscally-responsible government.

I want a strong national defense, which uses a measured response, but commits wholeheartedly to any overseas engagements it commits to.

I want our borders defended, our immigration laws enforced, and by that I mean, to come here you have to not be a danger (terror, criminal, disease) to society, to stay here you have to commit to being an American with no hyphens in your title.  You commit to speak English as your first language and adopt wholeheartedly our social morays and beliefs.  And that government will not reward widespread invasive lawbreaking with US citizenship.

I want a family to mean one man, one woman and any children they happen to make or adopt.  I don’t want any special privileges to be afforded to homosexuals and I certainly don’t want a dangerous and perverted lifestyle to be forced down Americas’ throat and certainly not inculcated in our children via a government-controlled school system.

I want a government that recognizes every single bit of the Constitution and especially all those prohibitions in the Bill of Rights, which do not so much grant any citizen those rights as much as it forbids the government from interfering with those rights.

THAT is what I thought the Republican Party was all about.

When they finally got their day in the sun and started to spend like Demoncrats, open the borders like Demoncrats, push Amnesty for Illegals like Demoncrats, infringe on my privacy, free speech and self defense rights like Demoncrats, I see little use in identifying with a beltway cadre that has lost touch with what it means to be Conservative.

I have not gone away. And many others who share the same beliefs have not gone away.  When we get a leader to step up to the plate and say, ‘This is what I’m about,’ and it sounds a lot like Ronny Ray-gun, I am there for him all the way.

I’ve learned that party membership is not the real cutting score when it comes to securing my vote—it is, and always has been, where is the candidate on the issues.
