Excessive Use Of Tasers?

Scarcely a week goes by without some report of possible excessive taser use by law enforcement agents.  A week ago there is this story where Police Taser boy with broken back 19 times allegedly to ‘keep him from getting hurt’!?  This week there is the report Witnesses rattled by death of man who was Tasered.  Now being shocked with a taser even once can’t be good for ones health so multiple tasering should be more harmful especially if the tasered individual has significant health problems e.g. weak heart.  It’s doubtful that the police would know beforehand the medical condition of their victim.

Deaths following application of tasers are a growing concern.

Since 2001, more than 300 people in the United States and Canada have died after being shocked with a Taser, according to Amnesty International, which plans to release a report in October on the growing use of the devices. Five of those were in Pennsylvania, including the August 2007 death of Chad Cekas outside the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

It seems to me that if police have trouble subduing a person with a single taser shot, they should fall back to the tried and true mathods they used before they had tasers.  What do you think?

Tried and true methods? I see. Let’s not use this highly effective tool on a combative, drug or alcohol soaked subject. Let’s get in there and FIGHT HIM LIKE A MAN!!!!!

Bullcrap.

I’ve been in too many scraps in the last twenty years and have watched as the taser became part of law enforcement’s tool box. Officer injuries are down - WAY down since pepper spray and, lately, the taser have been used.

Tell you what - the next time you have a drunken 220 pound guy squared off at you with his fists bunched and ready to rumble just jump right in there, cowboy.

Let’s see...traditional methods, traditional methods....

Oh. You can always roll around with him in the steet, kickin’ and a gougin’ in the mud and the blood and the beer. Been there, done that.

You can beat him with a club, sure, but we’ve all seen videos of that, haven’t we? Been there, done that as well.

You can shoot him with a .12 gauge bean bag and hope it will stun him enough to subdue him. Done that, too. It’s not NEARLY as effective as a taser.

Further, I’ve seen the taser save lives and can quote you chapter and verse on it.

Is it perfect? Nope. But it’s a damn sight better than getting hurt or having to hurt someone else just to take them into custody.

And that 300 number....how many times was the taser used in the same period? Tens of thousands, probably. And you can bet that most of the taser related deaths are drug or physical health related.

You asked what I think, Doc. There it is.

Geez, pil, I hate to accuse you of cherry picking but....  I never said that the police should NOT use tasers.  The subject of my post has to do with excessive use.  Is it excessive to taser a boy with a broken back 19 times?  Shouldn’t the police be concerrned if the use of multiple taser shots results in the death of the perp?

As far as ‘traditional’ non-taser methods of subduing preps, the police used other methods for hundreds of years.  I guess they are not part of police academy training now.

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.

Good post docdave.

Is it excessive to taser a boy with a broken back 19 times?

No, not when they are trying to ‘keep him from getting hurt’. He must have been having a heart attack or something and they couldn’t get their hands on a defibrillator.

Doc,

Is the taser misused sometimes? Sure. Of course it is. But so is the baton, so was the chokehold before it was made taboo, so has the sidearm, so has the police car, so has pepper spray.

Everything has a potential for misuse.

Having been shot with the damn thing I can tell you - it hurts like hell. But it stops hurting immediately after the five second burst. It doesn’t break bones or leave bruises.

And, yes, all the old techniques are still taught in the academies.

It’s cruel to taser a boy with broken back 19 times. It’s pity policemen taking the path of cruelty in the name of protecting the law.
