Do As I Say (Not As I Do)

Members of the liberal left exude an air of moral certitude. They pride themselves on being selflessly committed to the highest ideals and seem particularly confident of the purity of their motives and the evil nature of their opponents.

To correct economic and social injustice, liberals support a whole litany of policies and principles: progressive taxes, affirmative action, greater regulation of corporations, raising the inheritance tax, strict environmental regulations, children’s rights, consumer rights, and much, much more.

But do they actually live by these beliefs? Politicians like the Clintons, Nancy Pelosi, the Kennedys, and Ralph Nader; commentators like Michael Moore, Al Franken, Noam Chomsky, and Cornel West; entertainers and ‘philanthropists’ like Barbara Streisand and George Soros.

Do they really live by the principles they so confidently advocate?

There’s a long list of glaring contradictions. Michael Moore denounces oil and defense contractors as war profiteers. He also claims to have no stock portfolio, yet he owns shares in Halliburton, Boeing, and Honeywell and does his post production film work in Canada to avoid paying union wages in the United States.

Noam Chomsky opposes the very concept of private property and calls the Pentagon “the worst institution in human history,” yet he and his wife have made millions of dollars in contract work for the department of Defense and own two luxurious homes.

Barbara Streisand prides herself as an environmental activist, yet she owns shares in a notorious strip-mining company.

Hillary Clinton supports the right of thirteen-year-old girls to have abortions without parental consent, yet she forbade Chelsea to pierce her ears and enrolled her in a school that would not distribute condoms to minors.

Nancy Pelosi received the 2002 Cesar Chavez Award from the United Farm Workers, yet she and her husband own a Napa Valley vineyard that uses nonunion labor.

Conclusion: Liberalism in the end forces adherents to become hypocrites. They adopt one pose in public, but when it comes to what matters most in their own lives-their property, their privacy, and their children-they jettison their liberal principles and embrace conservative ones

The contradiction: If these ideas don’t work for the very individuals who promote them, how can they work for the rest of us?

Back in 2003, Newsweek revealed that Bill Bennett (William J.), who had written a string of best-selling books promoting virtue ( and excoriating the moral failings of Bill Clinton), was a heavy gambler.

Liberal columnist Michael Kinsley gleefully predicted that Bennett’s hypocrisy would spell the end of his moral credibility, declaring, “As the joyous word spread, crack flowed like water through inner-city streets, family court judges began handing out free divorces, children lit bonfires with the The Book Of Virtues, and cynics everywhere thought, for just a moment: Maybe there is a God afterall.”

I wonder why no one in the MSM has pointed out the contradictions listed above. Where’s Michael Kinsley when you need him?

Nowadays falsehood stands erect and truth lies prostrate on the ground.

Joel.
So Peter Singer won’t kill his mom now that she has Alzheimer’s and you are calling him morally corrupt? That’s fucked up dude.
I just want to point out that when you or your wife or your kids get sick and are forced to take health care that has been paid for by tax dollars (I pay for all the military types health care - fucking mooches - like they can’t afford it - I BUY MY OWN GODDAMN HEALTH INSURANCE - can’t they?) I wanna be there to call you a FUCKING HYPOCRITE for not just letting them all die and being consistent with your ideals.

The difference between Bennett and Edwards is revealing: Bennett.  For Bennett, the morality accrues to the individual, and his gambling is clearly hypocritical in that light (bracketing for the moment the fact that gambling was conveniently absent from his otherwise all-inclusive list of wrongs).  For Edwards, on the other hand, the morality he’s talking about accrues to the system.  The relevant inquiry for hypocrisy isn’t whether he’s violating the spirit of rules not yet in place, but whether he would seek a special exemption for himself.

It’s not that difficult a distinction, so I’m a bit surprised by how badly this post whiffed.

Moralists are hypocrites when they suppose they are the moral standard.  Moralists are peceived to be hypocrites when the other presumes the Moralist believes oneself to be the moral standard.

Moralists who recognize moral absolutes then endeavor to live accordingly but at times fail, are simply human.  These too may attempt to point others to recognize moral absolutes.  The scorner will perceive the moralist a hypocrite and dismiss his efforts.  Others will listen and consider and be the better for it.

Everyone at some point is a hypocrite liberal and conservative.

Peter Singer is a leading proponent of excising the undesirable — the imperfect via abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. The disabled would fall under there, also, sometimes, the elderly.

So hell yes that makes him morally corrupt in addition to being (as the post states) a Hypocrite

Joel,

Well, I’m curious.  Where did this turn around take place?  Or was it just perceived?

The (dated, time stamped) examples from your comments on other threads are plentiful. But Ms., I’m not going to waste any more of my time on your self-righteous nonsense.

Joel, HG, time to bury the hatchet?!  Move on??

I commented on this thread.  You decided to attack.  If you’re going to make accusations back’em up.  Otherwise, I would welcome your silence about my “self-righteous nonsense”.
