Democracy is the Antidote to Terrorism
An opinion piece by robert108
My friends, I must apologize for being so affected by the lies, half-truths and outright fabrications by the MSM that I forgot the basic truth about our policy in the Middle East.
In my desire to correct the disinformation about what we are doing there, I missed the big picture. The Dems/MSM keep making the silly statement that this administration is “forcing democracy down the throats” of the Iraqi people, and are now making the same accusation about Pakistan, in their need to blame every bad occurrence in the world on President Bush.
The reality is very different. Terrorism is a tactic(and a strategy, btw) to impose the will of the minority on the majority, generally speaking. It uses intimidation and threats of death to coerce people into acting in ways they wouldn’t choose if they had the freedom to act as they wished. This is why democracy(or self-determination through democratically-elected representative govt) is the antidote to terrorism. Terrorists fear democracy because it gives the lie to their authoritarianism. They want to command the people to their standard of belief, instead of the people choosing for themselves. When the people get a choice, they don't choose terrorism.
When the President decided to fight terrorism by enabling the people of Afghanistan and Iraq to determine their own govt through free elections, and when he supports the people of Pakistan to do the same, and by extension, all the oppressed peoples of the world to have the same aspiration, he struck at the very foundation of terrorism.
He should be praised for this, and not villified for partisan political purposes by the Democrats. There are some things that are far more important than winning the next election.
Hat tip to Mark Belling, who is subbing for Rush today, for the inspiration for this article. He reminded me of the underlying truth about our foreign policy.
