Conrad On Not Fixing Deficit: “It’s easier not to”

This just in from 60 minutes. Sorry, the video is a little off from the audio.

(updated to improve video/audio sync on 7/9/2007)

Conrad: ...we are on a course that doesn’t add up.

CBS: Why doesn’t somebody do something about it?

Conrad: Because it’s always easier not to…

Whether we need to do something or not is another thing. BUT… when you are the chairman, you better know how to lead. If you say we’re off course, and you’re the man behind the steering wheel, WHAT’S GOING ON??

Isn’t this Kent Conrad, the guy who put his senate seat on the line to balance the budget? Kent, you have the keys, you’re holding the steering wheel. You’ve got a majority… and you say we’re going in the ditch because it’s easier than staying on the road?
Conrad: you get in trouble in politics when you make choices

Leadership? Fighter for North Dakota? It sounds like someone who’s been in office too long.

CBS: Do you think taxes oughta be raised?

Conrad: I believe first of all that we need more revenue…

Not exactly words of wisdom. Roll up your sleeves and get creative. At least he didn’t say he wants to increase taxes, of course that’s still to be seen. It’ll be hard with Ted Kennedy riding shotgun for him.

I think what’s really eating Conrad is he believes the Bush tax cuts really ARE working even though he’s said REPEATEDLY that they were to have been to blame, and that’s why he’s not really doing anything.

Conrad, the man with no opinions riding the political fence.  Is that modern day politics - if I don’t piss off anyone, I’ll keep getting reelected.

You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.

I’d like to know what choices Kent Conrad has made?

And why should we trust someone with the budget who lies to us about raising taxes?

It’s interesting that Conrad’s response to “Do we need to raise taxes” is “we need more revenue.” He’s obviously saying that we should raise taxes.

But here’s the thing: Why should we raise taxes when there’s already so much overspending in the federal budget?  Raising revenue isn’t the only way to solve budget deficits.  Cutting spending is another way.

Too bad big-government tax-and-spend liberals like Conrad aren’t interested in that.
