Conrad: I Only Come to North Dakota To Campaign

Over the weekend I checked on “Kent Conrad in the news. If found an article that ran in the ContraCostaTimes. This article also ran in the GF Herald, but that’s where I saw it first.

The article talked about differences in the Conrad campaign versus the Grotberg campaign. I picked up on very interesting quote by Senator Conrad:
Conrad said his campaign strategy is simple: Do it all the time, not just in an election year.

“When I come home, I don’t just sit in the living room,” Conrad said. “I go from town to town.”

So Senator Conrad has admitted that he only comes to North Dakota to campaign. Not to do one other thing. I wonder why that is.

Well we’ve all seen the article Rob ran on the shabby little apartment that Senator Conrad claims is his residence. Here’s a picture of Senator Conrad’s official residence which amounts to a mailing address:

Here's the apartment building:

This apartment is owned by GKC apartments. On his financial disclosure form he lists this as “Conrad Brother’s Partnership.” This property is assessed at $280,900. Since this building is a sixteen-plex the value of Kent Conrad’s official residence at $17,567. That’s not much for a big important Senator.

So I got to wondering where does he REALLY live? Well that’s also on the Internet. I’m not going to give his address but his “secondary residence” is valued at $935,740. Remember though the Washington DC real estate market has exploded in recent years.

I suppose by now you’re wondering what Senator Conrad’s real residence looks like. Well thanks to friends in low places I was able to find out. (Out of respect for his privacy I smudged out the street number).

So now we know why Senator Conrad only visits North Dakota to campaign. He wouldn’t be caught dead to be seen in his stinky old Bismarck living room. It also shows why Senator Conrad has to pose in front of his grandparents former house when he pretends he’s a North Dakotan.

North Dakota should be represented by North Dakotans in Washington. Right now we have three bureaucrats in Washington that only come home to campaign.

From the book cover of “Take this Job and Ship It”:

Dorgan] lives in Bismarck, North Dakota, and in McLean, Virginia, when the Senate is in session.

Why the compulsion to lie? He lives in McLean full-time.

Don’t think you can criticize Pomeroy on this basis, though.

The North Dakota media monopoly just plays along with this sham.

Wow, talk about twisting the statement, you are learning from the Rovian/RNC playbook.

Did Karl Rove make Conrad live in D.C. full time while he’s got a little sham residence here in ND?

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Puzzled maybe you know.  Conrad’s pushing 60 years old.  I’m thinking he’s lived about 3/4 of his life outside of the state.

How close am I.

Conrad’s bio is here. He’s 58.

I do think Conrad spends more time in North Dakota than Dorgan, who holds most of the state’s residents in contempt.

But they all play the citizens for suckers.

That’s not saying much is it?

I’ve never seen a biography that the high-lite of the education is attending junion high school.

excuse me, but the idea of you guys creeping around another person home/apt with a camera strikes me as some kind of borderline pathological stalker/obsessive.

If you are a fulltime student at NDSU why would anyone in their right mind expect you to live in Donnybrook and commute every day?

You fellers have so much venom in your gizzard its affecting your noggin.

one eyed jack on October 3, 2006 at 02:25 pm

One Eye, we merely expect that a North Dakotan would live in North Dakota when their out of state job is over.

This explains how exactly out of touch our three stooges are.

Most of my information came from websites that the government provides.  In fact the Grand Forks County government provides pictures just exactly like I showed of everyone’s house.

Of course I didn’t provide the address of either property.

Conrad has nothing in his “gizzard, with the exception of greed, and contempt for the rubes that pay for his posh brownstone in DC. What job has he actually ever had?

To the best of my knowledge Conrad has never had a private sector job.

How in the world can he represent us?

That is a problem I have with many politicians, all they have ever done, in one manner or another, is be “in” the government. I also do not want lawyers to hold elected office, nor to have direct controlling access to any position in government. Local, State, or Federal. Nor to have any control or position of authority in any company, corporation, or non-profit group. Period.

Wow. I am amazed. The Senator’s residence in ND is not much nicer or more expensive than my apartment in Detroit. You know, I know you’re trying to bash him for this, but this says to me that he is incredibly real. Why waste a lot of money on a big fancy house that he’s hardly ever going to see? And his townhouse in DC is no Buckingham Palace, either.

You said that he only comes back to campaign, but according to him he always considers himself to be campaigning, so no matter how much time he spent in ND it would be “only coming back to campaign” by definition. You also said that you expect him to live in ND when his “out of state job is over.” News flash: his job is never over until he’s no longer in office.

I guess you’d like that to be soon. It looks to me like you’ve got a frugal Senator with a strong work ethic, and you’re peeved about some perceived slight, that you think he thinks he’s too good for you.

I don’t think he thinks that. But I do think that if he did, he’d be right.

I’m sorry David but I think that the people representing us should live here.  I realize that many politicians don’t do that but I can’t vote against them.  I have to be concerned about my Senator.

Senator Conrad is 58 years old.  Throwing out his younger years when he didn’t control where he lived.  (And he didn’t live in ND much of the time, not something to hold against him); spent 8-10 years in the state.

On the other hand he comes back here to shoot a commercial, make a few public appearances, raise a few bucks and he’s back to Washington.

I’m glad you admit he doesn’t live there but he says he does.

Maybe you’d be happy, but I don’t like it David.

whitsler-
please name one Republican US Senator voters sent to work in Washington who did not live there, preferring instead to live in ND??

How would you expect our representatives to get to work every morning?

one eyed jack on October 3, 2006 at 05:29 pm

There you go again confusing the issue.

It’s obvious when Congress is in session that the Senators and Congressman need a place to stay.

I just don’t think it should be their ONLY residence.  It shouldn’t be that they legislate from Washington and leave the rest of us to live under the laws they wrote.

Maybe you’re happy to have Senator Conrad jet in here for three days, be seen and jet out, but he’s not a North Dakotan.

I think we deserve to be represented by a North Dakotan, not a Washingtonian.

Well, if you want to vote from someone who actually lives in North Dakota, well you can vote for Independent Roland Riemers for U.S. Senate.  His home is at 108 Cairns in Emerado and you can come and photograph him at his home anytime.

You said you’re glad I “admit he doesn’t live there”, and I guess you’re referring to my statement, “Why waste a lot of money on a big fancy house that he’s hardly ever going to see?”

I can’t “admit he doesn’t live there” because I have no knowledge of where he lives, apart from reading this blog entry. I just know that being a U.S. Senator is a demanding job that doesn’t allow much free time, and involves being in Washington or traveling most of the year.

If you’re concerned about where he lives, that’s your prerogative, but if you replace him, don’t you think you’ll just get the same from the new Senator? Roland writes about a candidate who can be seen “at his home anytime,” which is true of any unemployed person, but it changes once someone gets a job.

I can’t tell you what to find important in your Senators, but I can tell you what I find important in mine: how they vote. When they vote the way I would vote if I were in their place, I’m happy, and when they vote the other way, I’m displeased.

I have no idea how much time my Senators spend here in Michigan, nor do I care. Is there anything in Senator Conrad’s voting record that bothers you, or are you only concerned about whether he is an “authentic” North Dakotan?

I guess you’re entitled to your opinion that it doesn’t matter where a Senator representing North Dakota lives.

I provided a link to one of his campaign commercials.  In that he’s pretending he is a North Dakotan.  I guess Senator Conrad doesn’t agree with you.

The fact is that Senator Conrad has gone Washington.  So he spends his time bringing home Pork projects.  That’s odd as he also claims to be a budget hawk.

When Senator Conrad works the pork game then it’s ok for everyone else to do it.  We wind up with Canoe trails and give-a-ways to Ingersoll Rand.  That’s bad government.

This fall he was working on a “disaster” bill that would have paid farmers that suffered no crop loss.  We all should be upset about that.

If he had North Dakota roots he wouldn’t have to play these games to get elected.

Not only that, but both he and little Lord Pomeroy grew up collecting a government check all the way through college and will collect a couple the rest of their lives!

I will admit that I have a biased opinion but I think that many are not very educated on this issue.  I know that we all would wish that our senators lived in our states whenever possible.  It’s a nice thought and would be possible in a world made of gum drops and rainbows.  For one, their job is year round.  Even when they’re out of session they’re writing bills and such.  They also have an entire office of staff members to direct.  For two, most senators have wives and families.  When your children are in school or your wife has a year-round job in a place it would be nearly impossible for you to leave that place for a lengthy amount of time.  Unless you want the senator to be separated from his wife and children for half the year.  Unfortunately you would probably then criticize him for being against “family values.” Even if Senator Conrad is not re-elected his republican replacement would almost certainly live in D.C. year round.  But I’m sure you never thought about that.
