Chicago Tribune Gets It Wrong On Jesse Helms

By Michael M. Bates

Today’s Chicago Tribune carries a front page story on the late Jesse Helms, “5-time senator ‘great patriot’ who held fast to his beliefs.”

The piece’s author, Los Angeles Times staff writer Johanna Neuman, states:

Often he was the lone voice of dissent in the Senate. He was the only senator to vote against confirming Henry Kissinger as secretary of state during the Nixon administration. And he was the only senator to vote against making Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a holiday.

Both assertions are wrong.  MSNBC reported in a 2005 article on secretary of state Condoleezza Rice that Henry Kissinger was approved by the Senate in a 78-7 vote. And the King Center notes on its Web site that the King holiday bill, sponsored by Senator Edward Kennedy, passed in the Senate by a vote of 78-22.

In its eagerness to portray the late Senator as an isolated, extreme extremist, the mainstream media are making up their own “facts.”

[...]

Shame on them!

Everything I can find indicates that Helms did indeed vote against making it a holiday and was highly critical of King.

i can’t find anything pre-death on him n Kissinger. But pointing out that both bills passed by overwhelming margins doesn’t mean that he didn’t vote against them.

Obama/Biden is not change. It’s more of the same.

Ken: Sorry to have to tell you this, but the lie was that he was the only vote against those two measures, and that was a lie, in both cases.
FYI, both 7 and 22 are more than 1.  I even put the relevant parts in bold for you, and you still missed it.
Or maybe you were just looking for any excuse to attack the truth, and failed to read the actual facts.

robert108,

I agree with you most of the time, but you are a huge dick.  Grow up.  You’re one of the most immature “bloggers” i’ve come across on the internet… and that says something.

robert108’s argument is Jesse Helms wasn’t the ONLY one to vote against things that show that he was intolerant and a radical.

robert108, You showed them!

brenario,

You’re [robert108] one of the most immature “bloggers” i’ve come across on the internet… and that says something.

I 2nd, 3rd and 4th that.

I agree with you most of the time, but…

Nice John Kerry imitation; all that “but” means is that you didn’t mean what came before it.  Your resorting to juvenile namecalling is noted.

robert108’s argument is Jesse Helms wasn’t the ONLY one to vote against things that show that he was intolerant and a radical.

Congratulations, Nunez!  You finally got one right.  I disproved the lie that he was the only one to vote against those two measures.  It was all in the article.

robert108…

You’re just too smart for me.  I’m as about as conservative as they come, but just keep diluting yourself.  I give up… back to your exceptional commenting…

You’re just too smart for me. I’m as about as conservative as they come, but just keep diluting yourself.

The conservatives I know rarely lead off with personal attack, as they have better arguments.  Not only that, but they can spell well enough to know the difference between “diluting” and “deluding”.  You may be deluded, if you don’t know the difference.

I’m sure you make up for them in discussions.

He’s gotten shit on so many times on this blog, his consistency is amazing. He’s truly a man with his head in the sand. Forget the head, he’s 500ft deep.
