Censorship on YouTube

From Michelle Malkin:

Banned on YouTube
Back in February, you may remember, I cobbled together a little mini-movie called “First, They Came” inspired by the Mohammed Cartoon riots. It’s a simple slideshow highlighting the victims of Islamic violence over the years. We posted it at YouTube a while ago. No problems. Until last week, when I received this e-mail:(in body of piece, informing her that her video had been removed)

[...]

Anti-jihad YouTube users have reported having their videos yanked and accounts suspended, including Crusader18. Another YT user, Intelsum, writes:

It has come to my attention that Jihadis organized a campaign against us to have our videos removed by You Tube. Some people’s accounts have even been terminated. I don’t know exactly how the You Tube suspension system works, but it looks like a video will be removed if it gets a certain number of complaints (which may be accepted without investigation), and an account gets closed when the third video is removed. One of my videos was recently removed for “inappropriate content.” The video, ‘It’s In The Koran’ could be viewed at http://www.terrorfreeoil.org/videos/ItsInTheKoran.php, second screen (alternative video source). This video contains no sexually explicit content and could only be offensive to Muslims who reject any notion of criticism. At the same time, many al-Qaeda propaganda videos, Nazi videos, etc. are posted on You Tube.

Read the whole thing.

Awhile back, I had an exchange on the “Jesus Camp” thread with someone who insisted that YouTube was objective, and that they just published everything submitted to them. I guess that isn’t exactly true. I’m sure the jihadis don’t object to anti-Christian videos.

Comments

If they enforce their complaint policy objectively then I guess it’s ok. I don’t think they set themselves up to be creating controversy.

I’d like to see exactly what other videos they ban, that aren’t of an obviously obscene nature.

I sure as hell hope they aren’t simply enforcing yet another outraged Muslim veto on anything they don’t like.

The whole point of this is that it certainly doesn’t seem objective; it is more like “objectionable”. Censoring something due to hurt feelings is the definition of “subjective”, is it not?

From YouTube’s terms of agreement:

In connection with User Submissions, you further agree that you will not: (...) (iii) submit material that is unlawful, obscene, defamatory, libelous, threatening, pornographic, harassing, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive (...)

I guess a lot of people found it ethnically offensive. Very strange, coming from someone as level-headed as Malkin.

If she doesn’t like YouTube, she’s more than free to create her own video-sharing site.

Dave: So, you think that we must submit to Islamofascist values? That’s proper, by your standards?
Those terms are so general that they can be interpreted any way you want, which makes them highly subjective, which is the original claim by MM. She was right, and we now know where YT is really coming from.

I think your suspicion is accurate - they’re scared witless about being targeted by Islamic maniacs.

I agree. Fear is definitely a distressing emotion/feeling. Emotions are subjective.
They’re afraid of being whacked.
I wonder if the ‘Obsession’ video that Rob posted not so long ago was also banned for the same reason?

I’m wondering about the You Tube videos showing the illegal Mexican immigrant takeover of the Maywood, California Post Office.
The one where they raised the Mexican flag and put the American flag upside down below it. Would anybody consider that ethnically offensive?
What would be the difference?

Just wondering if Michelle can make a video/song about what the Bible and tora/Talmude...etc say concerning violence, killing of non beleivers, rape, slavery, blacks, stoning to death adultresses, and masscring of non jewish women and children?
if she has dificulteis of sources, not to worry i`ll supply her.Because it seems that any act of violence or murder any muslim does,it is blamed on the Koran.i wonder who is to blame for all the Christian and Jewish violence and terror that took and is still taking place,(perhaps it is also the koran!)

Maybe Lisa has a valid point. After all it’s only a minority of Muslims (20%) that are the crazy homicidal maniac type.

There are 1 billion Muslims worldwide. That means that there’s only 200 million of the murdering bastards roaming around.

The population of the U.S. is 295 million.

Anyone see a potential problem?

Bezu Fache on October 6, 2006 at 01:07 pm

Bezu: Thanks for running the numbers; we can now appreciate the threat of Islamic terrorism, no matter what the cause. Their scriptures certainly don’t seem to be stopping them from being violent to those who choose to believe in something other than they do.
