Carbon Credits

How does one purchase a carbon credit and once purchased, can you return it or exchange it for some other type of credit?

Would these make good Christmas presents?

Maybe Earth Day presents?

Does the purchase of a “credit” force CO2 out of the atmosphere?

When a credit is purchased in 2007 does it hold the same value in 2008?

Can I pre-purchase carbon credits for my children like I did their pre-paid college fund?

Maybe I can leave carbon credits to people in my will?

Are Carbon Credits Taxed?  At what rate?

Do you get a tax break for buying them?

Speak to a stockbroker? I think they deal in Carbon credits now. Can you exchange it? Your stockbroker probably could.

Would these make good Christmas presents?
Some people think so.

Maybe Earth Day presents?
See last answer.

No, but I believe the money is used to invest in buying land to plant trees, that kind of thing.

It’s value probably rises in line with inflation.

Can I pre-purchase carbon credits for my children like I did their pre-paid college fund?
Yep.

Maybe I can leave carbon credits to people in my will?
Probably can too.

Dunno about that, probably though at some stage.

I know that in the UK one gets tax breaks for buying Carbon Credits.

I understand the questions were rhetorical, just thought it’d be fun to answer them. Personally, I prefer the idea of buying some land myself and growing trees. That way I and my family get to enjoy it.

Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

All very interesting questions. Yet you walked past the most important one of all. Will people send me $10 a week to offset their carbon foot print? I figure I can offset 20-25 people per week, and if I work overtime I could notch that up to 30!

I’m with 2H9. I believe the money is used to line the pockets of whatever tool figured out how to take the hippies money in such a creative way. No doubt they have some of those ‘PIRG’/idealist college students working for them for pennies and celebrities fawning at the prospect of owning carbon credits as long as it comes with a t-shirt or a hat or some other means for those around you to tell how conscious and heddy you are.

My local energy provider offers me the option of paying a bit more on my monthly bill for alternative energy sources. The idea is that you pay more and you get some wind or biomass energy instead of coal energy. So I called the energy provider and they do not work with the ‘alternative energy’ people at all. In other words, my paying extra goes to these people for ‘research’ (horseshit), and the overall energy mix being provided to my house or even my area is uninfluenced. It a graft. ‘Research’. This one is prodominantly centered around wind energy. How much more windmill research do they have to do? Its so much BS.

Get your ‘alternative’ energy here! All purchases will go towards ‘research and development’ (of my bank account) and each buyer will be sent a cute little piece of paper with a gold seal on it.

I might have to start a “research” team… consisting of my family… I’ll set up a web site for donations and claim that AlGore contributes to me…

I won’t need to work again.  What a cool idea…
