Bush Slashes Funding

The American people are painfully aware of the tragedies of President Bush’s senseless war in Iraq ; however, look for yet another tragedy it will soon cause right here in my home state of Wisconsin. Federal grants to help state and local police fight crime will be slashed by nearly two-thirds in 2008, from 6.48 million in 2007 to only 2.3 million in 2008. The cuts will occur this summer.

The executive director of the state agency which disburses the money said the cuts are draconian. The West Allis, Wisconsin Police Chief said that he wonders how much longer Milwaukee County’s Metro Drug Unit will keep running. The funds also aid in an important crime prevention program which helps police officers and community prosecutors work together in a geography based system.

Rep. Dave Obey who fought hard to restore the cuts said the following: “ we restored some of the cuts, but he {Bush} insisted on his total numbers because he wanted to pump every dollar into that stupid war in Iraq.

Nationally, the program was funded at 520 million in 2007 and 170 million in 2008. Look for things to heat up even more this summer, compliments of “W” and his war in Iraq.

One: Small civics lesson. Federal funding bills start in the House of Representatives. Maybe your argument is with Nancy Pelosi?
Two: You say your state is going to receive $2.3 Million dollars and you’re ungrateful because it’s not bigger???
Aside from the fact that sending money to the Federal government and getting it sent back to the states is like getting your oats after they’ve gone through the horse, you might ask yourself, how much of that money came from Wisconsin in the first place, only to come back with Federal strings attached on how you spend the money?

Here’s a thought: Local people decide which local services are important to them and then...they pay for them themselves!
Yeah! Radical, dude! But give it a try!

The other thing would be to campaign for meaningful Federal tax relief, so that there would be more money for Wisconsin (and all the other states) to spend for local programs with more local control.

Take back control of your state and your community, Davinski. Wean yourself from the Federal teat!

Maybe this will slow down the skidoo (how long since you’ve heard that word) speed trap plague in WI.

Not that it would be remotely a bad thing.

LOL, no doubt I like how Bush is blamed for everything bad in the world and in the USA. Funny if he is so unpopular he has done a good job exposing the Dems weakness. Too bad the Media doesn’t report it.

Proof, you raise some good points; however, our roads, schools, and many more areas to help maintain our infrastructure depend greatly on the feds. Our standard of living would decline greatly without them helping.
I would much rather see this money of ours go to help folks here in Milwaukee and other cities in the US than throw it down the tube in Iraq.

Davinski: The thing you miss is that all the money comes from the taxpayers, and when it is passed through several layers of govt, all of which take their “cut”, there is less money in the system to create and maintain the needed infrastructure.  Ipso facto, the money should stay local.  Generally speaking, the feds can’t “help” anybody; all they can do is redistribute income, while taking their cut off the top.  The feds only reduce our standard of living, by redistributing our earnings(through taxation and regulation) to themselves.
Without national defense, there is no United States.  The bulk of wasteful fed spending is in the form of unnecessary social engineering programs and entitlements.  What they really do is to buy votes for the political class.
According to the Constitution, national defense is a legitmate govt expenditure, but social engineering is not.

davi, you Democrat idiots have turned the great state of Wisconsin into a crime ridden hellhole and now you want other states to bail you out. Does that about sum it up?

Perhaps you should strip the money out of excessive social program spending, crack down on criminals instead of dropping charges in so many cases, and slash the salaries and perks of elected and non-elected government officials. Then you would have plenty of money for law enforcement and substantially less crime.

Roads (interstate highways, at least) I would agree with you! There is a national benefit to interstate highways.
Schools...not so much! Local funding of schools means local control.
Besides, you Wisconsinites don’t hate your kids so much you wouldn’t pay for their education, do you?

Davinski, have you ever heard of the “property tax”?  This is a time-honored way that towns, cities, counties, and townships have managed to provide police protection and other essential services for centuries.
