Blame Mom Attitude Alive and Well

Mothers always have to take one for their kids. All through out history mothers have been held responsible for the outcome of their children’s lives. If anything ever went wrong it was because mom screwed up somewhere. For a very long time it was the official belief of the scientific and medical community that mothers caused autism in their children by not loving them enough. These days I hear people say, with regards to autism, things like, “At least we’re not blaming the mothers any more.” Actually, we still do and I don’t think we ever really stopped.

These days the blame mom attitude has become perhaps a bit more subtle but it is there none the less. Today more than a few argue (quite vehemently) that autism is caused by vaccinations and/or toxins in food and the environment. The implication of this belief is, to me, obvious. If your child has autism it’s your fault for vaccinating your child, it’s your fault for eating the wrong kinds of food during pregnancy and/or while nursing, it’s your fault for not breastfeeding enough or at all. With the rise of various alternative treatments and miracle “cures” we can also add to the list that it’s the parents’ fault, usually mom’s, that a child is autistic because they aren’t trying all of these new methods to “cure” or “recover*” their child.

This, Preventing Autism: An Emerging Hypothesis, is nothing more than the old refrigerator mom theory with a new suit of clothes on. Please note that dad, the author and presumably the source of this new hypothesis, had zero hoops to jump through in order to “prevent” autism in his child.

I found the disturbing post above through Left Brain/Right Brain who has some interesting comments on it.

*A pet peeve of mine with people who make claims about recovering children from autism. Those kids were never lost. They were right in front of you waiting for you to understand and accept them.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Moms today are getting blamed for everything which happens to our children, including cause of disease. Anger is replacing common sense. If our children’s conduct is bad it can’t be peer influence or our degenerating youth culture, it has to be mom. John Lennon said it best- “Women are the N’s of the world.”

The blame should go to who is at fault.  If it’s Mom, then the blame should go there.  The Lennon quote, btw, is “Woman is the n*gger of the world.” It was written during the time Yoko was brainwashing him.

All through out history mothers have been held responsible for the outcome of their children’s lives.

This might be because Mom is the main influence on the child during the formative years. The relationship with Mom is the foundation upon which the rest of the life is built.

The implication is that vaccinations, food, and the environment may have toxins that affect our health.

That’s what I get out of it. I think you’re reading too far into this one.

Some time ago, I posted an article on vaccinations possibly being connected to the increase in autistic children.  The most likely suspect element in vaccinations was the preservative thermasol, a mercury derivative, which I think has been eliminated from any new vaccines but may still reside in older stock.  Another concern was the trend to give vaccinations to new borns within a few months of their births and that vaccine agents may have some negative effect on the still developing childs brain.

Excellent examples of exactly what I’m talking about. Thank you gentlemen.

The specific issue of autism depends on whether it’s nature or nurture.  Personally, I lean toward nature.  The “increasing incidence of autism” might simply be an artifact of better diagnosis and increased attention to yet another “problem”.

I think blaming Mothers for vaccinating their children is not what this is about at all. What it is about is the fact that the medical establishment never disclosed any of the information in order for parents (not just mothers) to make informed decisions when it came to this issue. When my children were born (94 and 97)I was NEVER told about neurological issues that could result. If had been told I wouldn’t have one child with ADHD and the other with full blown autism. Both of which are mercury poisoning.

Claiming that parents were/are duped or mislead by some government/medical/corporate conspiracy is no better. It’s just a different facet of the same set of dice.
