Blackwater’s NC Armory Raided

RALEIGH, N.C. - Federal agents raided Blackwater Worldwide this week as part of an investigation into whether the private security company sidestepped federal laws prohibiting the private purchase of automatic assault rifles, the company said Thursday.

Blackwater spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell said investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched Blackwater’s armory at its corporate headquarters in Moyock on Tuesday as part of the investigation. Court documents show that agents seized 22 guns as evidence from a vault dedicated to county authorities.

The company signed agreements in 2005 in which Blackwater financed the purchase of 34 automatic weapons for the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Tony Perry became the official owner of the weapons, but Blackwater was allowed to keep most of the guns at its armory.

Federal laws prohibit private parties from buying automatic weapons, but allows law enforcement agencies to have them.

Blackwater’s NC Amory (sic) Raided

Off to a good start! Now, to the disinformation:

Federal laws prohibit private parties from buying automatic weapons, but allows law enforcement agencies to have them.

Wrong! It requires a Federal license, but private individuals can legal own fully automatic weapons. I have personally fired fully automatic weapons that are owned by a friend of mine.

22 guns out of an “armory”, huh? and Blackwater didn’t even own them, the sheriffs department did. I bet the sheriff’s pissed.

The private military company Blackwater has found an unusual way to skirt federal laws that prohibit private parties from buying automatic weapons. Blackwater bought 17 Romanian AK-47s and 17 Bushmasters, gave ownership of the guns to the Camden County sheriff and keeps most of the guns at Blackwater’s armory in Moyock.

Tiny Camden County—population 9,271—is one of the most peaceful in North Carolina. In the last 10 years, there have been two murders, three robberies and seven rapes reported. The sheriff has just 19 deputies.

Sheriff Tony Perry said his department has never used the 17 AK-47s outside of shooting practice at Blackwater. None of his 19 deputies are qualified to use the AK-47s, Perry said, and his department’s need for automatic weapons is “very minimal.”

...The AK-47 would be a poor choice of weapon for a SWAT team, said John Gnagey, executive director of the National Tactical Officers Association, the national organization of SWAT officers.

As a combat weapon, the AK-47 is too large and powerful for SWAT teams, Gnagey said. It is rugged but relatively inaccurate.

“And there’s the perception problem,” Gnagey said. “Every terrorist attacking the U.S. is armed with AK-47s.”

Most SWAT teams use the H&K MP5 submachine gun or the Bushmaster M4, he said.

Under federal law, only government agencies—military or law enforcement—are allowed to acquire and possess automatic weapons. There is an exception for automatic weapons purchased before May 1986, when the law went into effect.

The manufacture of new machine guns that civilians could purchase was effectively banned by language in the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986.

boob ignorantly quoted this:

There is an exception for automatic weapons purchased before May 1986, when the law went into effect.

This would make you, boob, WRONG. (Is it again, or still?)
They are not manufacturing new ones for sale, (which, incidentally makes them much more expensive!)but anyone who fulfills the Federal licensing requirements (and ponies up big bucks) can legally purchase fully automatic weapons.

Any more stuff you obviously DO NOT UNDERSTAND that you’d like to cut and paste tonight, boob?

“We believe all aspects of our contracts with the sheriff’s office are lawful and proper,” Tyrrell said, adding that the ATF has known about the arrangement for a long time.

Tyrrell also said federal authorities have known about the weapons for years and that investigators got a complete look at the company’s cache in 2005 after two employees were fired.

Kenneth Wayne Cashwell and William Ellsworth “Max” Grumiaux were sentenced this year on gunrunning charges, but they were spared prison time after federal prosecutors asked a judge to approve a lighter sentence because of their ongoing cooperation in a weapons investigation.

Blackwater said it fired the men after finding they had been stealing from the company. Cashwell operated Blackwater’s armory in 2005, Tyrrell said.

“When these guys were fired, we invited (ATF) in to do a full search of everything we possessed,” Tyrrell said. “They did a full audit, and those weapons were there at that time.”

She said it is not unusual for Blackwater to store automatic weapons because the company is licensed to sell, provide training on, or even manufacture firearms.

Both ATF and U.S. Attorney George Holding declined to comment.

link

This is at least a bit more information than what was provided.

Intereting that ATF already kew what was there because Blackwater invited them to come in and do an audit on the weapons stored there (after the two employees were fired), which these weapons were there also, and ATF found no problems.

In a statement emailed to ABC News, Tyrell said:

“All aspects of our contract with a local Sherriff’s Department are valid and lawful. Some of the same ATF agents involved in the current inquiry have long been aware of this arrangement as a result of visits to our facility and audits of our firearms programs at Blackwater’s request. As a company that is fully licensed to sell, provide training on, or even manufacture weapons---including machine guns---we have worked closely with the ATF to ensure we are in compliance with all applicable federal firearms laws. We look forward to cooperating with the government to resolve this allegation.”

Link

At least with this, we have more information to discuss than what was originally given.

Understood.

What I don’t understand from the article is that ATF knew about these weapons for years, and they also were invited in by Blackwater to do an audit of hte weapons at their location when they fired two employees for stealing from the company, and the weapons were there during an audit which the ATF did not seem to have issues with then either.

I am curious why all of a sudden ATF is doing this.

I think there is more to the story that has yet ot come out yet.

From sanity’s link:

The issue has attracted local attention because Camden County, with a population of 9,721, has experienced very little violent crime, only two murders, three robberies and seven rapes, according to the Charlotte News-Observer.

From my link:

The 2005 agreements give the sheriff’s office unlimited access to the weapons, including 17 Romanian AK-47s and 17 Bushmasters. But Perry has said his department has only used the AK-47s in shooting practice at Blackwater and that none of his 19 deputies are qualified to use them.

San, this is not a new thing for ATF. They had close relations with the owner of the structures at Mt Carmel in Texas, had spent considerable time at shooting ranges with him and other residents of said structure. The ATF prevailed upon the Sheriff of McLennan County to release the owner of that property, and less than 24 hours after conducted an illegal raid upon that structure and after several weeks they ultimately burned it down and killed a large number of children and women. ATF is not the final arbiter of right and wrong. State and Federal courts have found them in the wrong, repeatedly. Mt Carmel being just one instance.
