“Bitter” Gun Owners? Wrong Again, Barry!

Arthur C. Brooks, in the WSJ Online, examines the comment by putative Democrat front runner Barack H. Obama before a group of San Francisco liberals recently, about “bitter people” “clinging” to guns, God, etc.

According to the 2006 General Social Survey, which has tracked gun ownership since 1973, 34% of American homes have guns in them. This statistic is sure to surprise many people in cities like San Francisco – as it did me when I first encountered it. (Growing up in Seattle, I knew nobody who owned a gun.)

Who are all these gun owners? Are they the uneducated poor, left behind? It turns out they have the same level of formal education as nongun owners, on average. Furthermore, they earn 32% more per year than nonowners. Americans with guns are neither a small nor downtrodden group.
Hear, that Barack? Gun owners earn an average of 32% more than non-owners. (I can attest to that! You generally don’t start purchasing firearms until after you have above average disposable income. Most guns ain’t cheap!)

Nor are they “bitter.” In 2006, 36% of gun owners said they were “very happy,” while 9% were “not too happy.” Meanwhile, only 30% of people without guns were very happy, and 16% were not too happy.

In 1996, gun owners spent about 15% less of their time than nonowners feeling “outraged at something somebody had done.” It’s easy enough in certain precincts to caricature armed Americans as an angry and miserable fringe group. But it just isn’t true. The data say that the people in the approximately 40 million American households with guns are generally happier than those people in households that don’t have guns.

The gun-owning happiness gap exists on both sides of the political aisle. Gun-owning Republicans are more likely than nonowning Republicans to be very happy (46% to 37%). Democrats with guns are slightly likelier than Democrats without guns to be very happy as well (32% to 29%). Similarly, holding income constant, one still finds that gun owners are happiest.
Hear that? Some of those "poor, bitter boobs" you are disparaging are Democrats! (Let me know how that works out for you in the PA primary!)

Why are gun owners so happy? One plausible reason is a sense of self-reliance, in terms of self-defense or even in terms of the ability to hunt their own dinner.

Many studies over the years have shown that a belief in one’s control over the environment dramatically adds to happiness. Example: a famous study of elderly nursing home patients in the 1970s. It showed dramatic improvements in life satisfaction from elements of control as seemingly insignificant as being able to care for one’s plants.

So, self reliant people tend to be happier, and less self reliant people tend to be...Democrats?

Proof, speaking with a large group of “bitter” gun owners yesterday I can attest to the veracity of this article. Out of the 160 odd people present, I was, by far, the poorest person there. Doctors(not Piled Higher and Deepers, real Doctors), engineers(civil, electrical, computer sci, architectural), even lawyers, bank and investment execs, 5 College level teachers(one of which asked me about doing some remodeling, God I love group shoots!) several local/state/Fed law enforcement types. And, unusual amongst us on a shoot day, politics was discussed. A LOT. Several men who I know to be fairly solid Democrats expressed a great deal of frustration with this primary, and by no means are supporting the current field of candidates. They actually like McC far better than billary or Obamoid. They see the Democrat Party being out of phase with them.

Last gunshow I was at was much the same. Lots of people talking politics, when usually there is very little. And the crowd I shoot with is not just a local group. Most belong to several sportsmens clubs and associations, and they cover a 5 state region as to working/living. Not to mention retirees, private sector and GS.

Brooks’ data is lowballing the economic and educational level of many gun owners.

Oh, and several asked if I was attending services in Foxburg this morning. Guess after all that gun clinging they needed to balance out with some bible clinging.

Oh, and the only thing any of them are bitter about is their low scores! I love shooting with rich people.

You know, 2H9, I could believe your “boots on the ground” assessment, if only I didn’t know you to be a gun, God & ‘grant-hating clinger.

One thing about those rich people, they chamber their rounds one at a time just like us poorer folk!

And they hand over their money, too! I finished up 3rd, behind a retired FBI sharpshooter and a USMC Scout/Sniper Gunnery Sarg. Gawd! I do love my Garand.

How can you trust somebody who won’t welsh on their bets? All those liberals that said they were going to leave the country if Bush was elected? Seven, almost eight years we’ve been waiting for these guys to make good on their promise!

Skinflints don’t last with us. Everyone that rosters to shoot puts in $20. 1/2 the pot goes to a charity, this time one of our local veteran’s centers, the rest gets split 3 ways. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Lets just say that 600 rds of 7.62 NATO was considerably more than paid for.

Seriously, you must have done some pretty nice shooting to place. Congratulations!
I don’t get out to the range nearly as much as I’d like these days. *Sigh*

12 sets of 50 rds. 8 perfect sets, 1 of 47, 3 of 49. That damned Jarhead did all 12 perfect. 2 of them with my Garand! Larry"Da Gman” did 10 perfect.

I have been slacking during this past winter, shooting the RPK what little I have been. I got to get back on the line more, do some therapy!
