Auto Bailout
Bailout is such a misleading tag. Actually, its a loan. When Chrysler got their loan under Lee Iacocca, it was paid back in full and the government made money. That being said, what fortitude it must take to sit in front of such pomposity and ask for assistance. The very pomposity that played a large part in the need to ask for assistance. Beyond the cafe standards we have free trade that does not equal fair trade, which not only allowed the sale of once foreign made vehicles to the market at a pace unequal to the exportation of American made vehicles, but then allowed the actual production of the vehicles into the country.
And there they sat, getting their tongue lashing from the “board of governors” of our government, who are currently unable to balance a budget and are in trillions of dollars of debt. They who park their cars in a garage full of cars not made by GM, Ford, or Chrysler, while they enjoy a retirement package that is better than anyone will enjoy in any industry in this country. Of course, they will never have to give up or re-negotiate that retirement package, no matter how poorly they perform at their job. Their contract need not be re-negotiated, the taxpayers will pay as much as they are told to.
What fortitude it must have taken to listen to the snotty, unprofessional diatribes of a group so apparently unaware of the far-reaching effects of the automotive industry in this country. Apparently they do not realize that cars are built outside of Detroit, and are co-dependent on many, many other industries. And then, to be asked by that group - the group that is unaware of the progress and concessions made by the Big 3 in the last 8-10 years - to go home and devise a plan/proposal, muster up more fortitude and come back for another round. Oh, and I don’t fly coach, but make sure you do. I won’t take a cut in my pay or benefits, but you should.
As much fortitude as I think I have, I don’t think I have that much.
