And the Bureaucrats Shall Inherit the Earth.

Its been a while since I’ve posted something on the rank stupidity, ineptitude, and unimaginable corruption that is the United Nations.  I offer the following, taken from an AP report via Fox, to make up for my dereliction.

UNITED NATIONS — The Security Council voted Friday to immediately close down the U.N. inspection bodies that played a pivotal role in monitoring Iraq’s unconventional weapons programs under Saddam Hussein.

The resolution terminating the mandate of the U.N. bodies responsible for overseeing the dismantling of Saddam’s programs to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and long-range missiles was approved by a vote of 14-0.

Russia abstained, saying there was still “no clear answer to the existence of weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq.

Since 2005, the United States has been trying to get the Security Council to wrap up the work of the inspectors, who were pulled out of Iraq just before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and were barred by the U.S. from returning.

Iraq’s new leaders also have been lobbying for the council to stop using the country’s oil revenue to pay the salaries of the inspectors — and to have all money remaining in the U.N.’s oil-for-food account transferred to the government.

The resolution authorizes Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to transfer all remaining unallocated funds in the oil-for-food account to Iraq’s Development Fund — about $60 million.

So… four and a half years since the invasion and overthrow of Saddam, four years since the UN turned tail and ran after a truck bomb damaged the organization’s deliberately unguarded Baghdad compound, three and a half years since the Oil-for-food scandal hit the press, the largest such financial scandal in history, three years since the Iraqis’ first election, two and a half years since the Iraqi constitution was approved, and six months since Saddam himself assumed room temperature at the end of a rope, and all this time the vaunted United Nations, that “last, great hope for mankind,” has been spending the Iraqi people’s OFF millions, paying weapons inspectors, staff, and who knows who or what else, all for doing nothing, while the US and Iraq both tried to get the UN to stop spending and return the remainder.

If there is any reason whatsoever for the continued existence of this utterly failed, hopelessly inept, totally corrupt organization, it has escaped my attention.  And there is nothing about the United Nations that is worthy of anything but sadness and contempt.
