America is doomed

I am, as I write this watching the featured documentary.

“God is your enemy.” ‘You will eat your babies.” “God hates fags.”
These are not typical Christian messages, but the fire and brimstone preachings of the Phelps family who make up almost all of the 71 members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.

These people seem to be complete nutballs!

Led by Pastor Fred Phelps, The Westboro Baptist Church is essentially a Christian sect , who believe that any Christian country which allows or condones homosexuality is doomed.
There is an interview with Louis Theroux here.

Probably the most controversial church in America, it is where Louis Theroux spent three weeks trying to fathom why they have created such a strange ministry.
Since the Iraq war, this Church has become increasingly infamous for picketing the funerals of dead soldiers as their protest against an America that “tolerates homosexuality”. The Phelps family believes that these soldiers were struck down by God’s wrath for fighting for a depraved and doomed nation.
Shirley, daughter of the leader – Pastor Fred Phelps – takes Louis into the bosom of her family. Her 11 children go to school, watch movies and play sport, but they have no friends and no spare time is allowed. Their life must be given over to preaching against homosexuality and spent in preparation for, they believe, the fast-approaching judgement day.
As Louis becomes a fixture around their home compound, he begins to witness the buried emotional toll this life has taken on the younger members. Jael (21) says she will never marry, never have a boyfriend and never have sex. Instead, she’ll attend five pickets a week across the country, shouting out the Phelps’s message of hate.
A group of toddlers hangs in her wake, holding picket signs they clearly don’t understand: six-year-old Noah has a banner emblazoned with the message “Thank God for 9/11”.
Louis also meets Steve Drain, the last documentary maker to film the members. So touched was Drain by their message that, halfway through filming, he moved his whole family down from Florida and is now Pastor Fred Phelps’s right-hand man.
Louis locks horns with the leaders of the ministry and lays bear their inner workings as they doggedly pursue their mission. But he also tries to find out if there’s any chance of the younger members escaping the influence of the elders.

What say you all? Is this too far for freedom of speech? Should their children be made to protest with them?

Comments

Well, the show has just finished and despite their message of hate, the family seemed like any ordinary (God-fearing/loving) family. It seems incongruous with their message, but they feel they are doing a service for the world - as their ministry is the only true ministry - and they do it through love for God’s creation.
The documentary saw children as young as six being taken on protests with the family at funerals of US servicemen. Children who didn’t understand the message they were preaching. One child was injured at a demonstration when a passing motorist threw something at him and they all had to contend with (pretty much) everyone else hurling vitriol at them. The members of the church see the hate from everyone else as vindication that their message is right.

This is oddly similar to the attitude of the America-hating lefties, who claim to be “saving” America.  Any criticism of their values is taken as evidence of their validity.  Strange!  Maybe it the nature of fanaticism…

Are all lefties America-hating? Can’t you love America, but still be left-wing.

Good question.  Maybe some of them merely dislike America, but all of them wish for America to be remade in the vision of Karl Marx, and so even their “ideal America” would bear no resemblance to the America created by the ideas and principles of the Founding Fathers.  To me, it’s simply splitting hairs.  If America were really OK with the lefties, they would be Conservatives, I guess, and they definitely aren’t.

Of course, I did refer to the America-hating lefties, so if there are any lefties who love America the way it is, they are excluded from my statement.

Or do you just mean the fanatical lefties?

IMO, all lefties are fanatics of some sort.  Look at their tactics.  The Phelps family is simply using leftie tactics to impose their message on others.  Leftie protestors have been doing this kind of crap since the late Fifties, and it has been regarded as acceptable dissent.  When some nutty Christians do it, it gets recognized for what it really is: violent intimidation to deprive other Americans of their rights.  What the Phelps family is doing is no different from what the antiwar protestors and the gay rights protestors do.  They are both equally wrong.

robert108 on April 1, 2007 at 02:51 pm

Given the tactics of fanatical lefties do mirror those of the Phelps to a degree, but do anti-war protestors picket the funerals of servicemen killed in action? That is just too far. I imagine the Phelps don’t see themselves as lefties, but as right-wing.

I don’t care what they see themselves as.  What we know is that Fred Phelps was always a Democrat and very close to the Gore’s.

I don’t blame you Flamer for this.  The left has trying to smear the conservatives with this kind of crap for a long time.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Man: You missed my point.  The tactics are the same; the goals differ.  It is the similarity in tactics to which I was referring, and thought I made that clear, when I wrote:

The Phelps family is simply using leftie tactics to impose their message on others.

I never said it was the same message, only the same tactics.

See, I only found out about these folks today, but I imagine you guys have had them on your tv’s for years. These people are an extreme example of the image we (Brits) are given of American Conservatives. My mistake. I stand corrected!

ManofFireandLight on April 1, 2007 at 03:14 pm

I figured that you probably were misled Flamer.

For example I was out of the country in 2001 when the Chinese fighter crashed into our surveillance plane.

The only news I could get was the BBC.  At no time did they mention that our airplane was in international territory.

That is an important point.

By the way, when I started blogging some lefties threw the Fred Phelps at me because I was on the right.  It took about two minutes to prove the opposite of what they were contending.

Man: The disgusting thing is that they are regarded in a completely different way by the MSM.  The Phelps family tactics are given truthful coverage, but the leftie fanatics get the whitewash treatment, as if their violent intimidation tactics are anything resembling “dissent”.

Does your comment imply that the message of the fanatical left is more valid?
Surely fanatical righties use the same tactics too, i.e. pro-lifers/anti-abortionists.

I’m not implying anything; I’m saying straight out that the MSM applies a double standard.  I thought I made that clear.
Maybe those whom you describe as “fanatical righties” us similar tactics in other instances, but they get very much different press coverage, which has been my point from the beginning.

Just to be clear; I regard violent intimidation as wrong, no matter who does it, but when lefties do it, the MSM excuses them, or ignores the violence and the intimidation.  In the relatively rare instances where others use the same tactics, but aren’t on the political left, the MSM is quite harsh with them, as they should be.  I just wish they would be equally as harsh with the leftie thugs.  I just want the news to reflect the truth of what is happening.

Yeah, we’re used to getting lumped in with those Democrats.

So much that you think you know about us is 180 degrees from the truth. It gets kind of insulting after awhile.

likwidshoe on April 2, 2007 at 02:56 am

Limey, let me put a personal face on it for you. I have stood guard a 2 funerals that the Phelpsfucks showed up at. They are not Christians. They are not Conservatives. And they are not Americans.

These Americans attend Servicemembers funerals to block the Phelpsfucks.

And these vetrans stand watch against the Phelpsfucks also.

And no, I did not say a word to these fuckbags. Stood my post and stared them down.

Fred himself only shows up when the national press confirms they will have camera crews onhand. Simply put, this is an extortion scam. If these “people” are refused a permit to march/gather they sue the city/town/county where the funeral is. If confronted in any way they sue individuals. The 2 groups above have ongoing and agressive countersuits in several states and a Federal District court against the Phelpsfucks.

This should help you understand these mental midgets.

Like those protesting at G8 summits (anti-globalisationists)?
I agree that violent intimidation is not acceptable, in any form and with whatever agenda.

Likwidshoe, I did say “I stand corrected!”, this is an admission of fault. How else am I going to be able to correct my misconceptions, if you don’t have the patience to correct me?

2H9, As I said in the original post:

These people seem to be complete nutballs!

I do not condone their behaviour and I find it incredibly difficult to understand why anyone would behave in the way they do. I understand how offensive they are, in everything they do. I was able to see from their website and from the featured documentary, just how insane their message truly is.
These people protested outside a hardware store that sold Swedish vacuum cleaners, because the Swedish authorities had arrested a minister who publicly preached about homosexuals being sinners. This is how twisted their logic is. I recognise them as nutters, don’t worry about that.

The Patriot Guard Riders and Rolling Thunder Inc do a stand up job and I salute you for doing your bit too.

My original questions reflected my views of these people.

What say you all? Is this too far for freedom of speech? Should their children be made(or allowed) to protest with them?

As to your query, no. They have the right to say this sickassed shit. And everyone else has the right to

A. Ignore their stupidity.

B. Sue and countersue the hell out of them, as a group and individually.

And C. Cheer and dance in the streets when their “compound” is surounded by the FBI and BATF and burned to the ground with them in it, a la David Koresh and the Branch Davidians.

But most of the left wing whack job’s, the blame America First crowd I.E. George Soros, Ted Kennedy, Dick “Turban” Durbin, Dianne Feinstine, Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, Sean Pean, Susan Seranda, Rosie O’Donnell et al, blame all of the worlds problems on the GOP and George Bush.

There are semi reasonable Dems like Joe Lieberman, Zell Miller.

MOFO,

[referring to the original post, not the boobs discussion]

No doubt you have the same problem with the British media as we suffer here in the USA - it’s been largely overtaken and subornated by the Left.  A survey, not so long ago, of major American media outlet editors showed that they were overwhelmingly (e.g. exceeding even the voter statistics of Berkeley, Californica) Leftists.

It should be beyond debate at this point, that the Leftist MSM have long since abandoned any semblence of objective reporting, and have instead metastasized into being mere propaganda organs. (see fake-but-accurate Tex Air National Guard memos, etc… )

One of the methods the Left uses to discredit their enemies is to select out a fringe element of a given group and portray them as being representative of the entire demographic.

Cases in point:

Conservative, truck-driving Southerners are consistently portrayed as the inbred male rapists that populated the novel and film DELIVERANCE.

Similarly, during the Clinton Gun-scare, Americans who attended gun shows were depicted as wild-eyed fanatics.  The MSM did this by seeking out only the most outlandish that attended any gun show and ignored the doctors, lawyers and every day Joe Sixpacks who still had a full mouth of teeth.

This portrayal of the fringe church is along the same lines.

Coming from England, with its own press taken over by the Left, there must be an analog example you can provide.  I understand that the English society may well be differently composed from the American model—we having spent some 200+ years being bereft of royalty, thus our definition of Conservative may well be different than that used in the UK.

My guess is that the tactics, however, will be about the same, and those who support the Royal family and the old-fashioned, David-Niven style England ridiculed and held up to contempt.

I’m not quite sure what a constant message of “God Hates Fags” has to do with the Gospel of “Jesus Christ died to save sinners.” Yes, he calls himself a Baptist, but it’s a shame that the media know nothing about theology to see whether this is true, or a pathetic bait & switch.  (the truth is the latter)
