Afghanistan: After $6 Billion, Where’s a Cop When You Need One?

Despite a $6 billion U.S. effort to recruit and train police in Afghanistan, the country’s national police force does not currently have a single unit that is “fully capable” of carrying out its mission, according to a new government report.

In fact, three-quarters of all Afghan police units were totally incapable of carrying out their mission, the report by the Government Accountability Office said; only three percent were judged to be capable, with help, of doing their jobs.

“Nearly seven years after the invasion of Afghanistan, I don’t think anyone can take a whole lot of pride in the answer to the question, ‘how are we doing,’” said Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., at a hearing on the topic Wednesday before his panel on oversight of national security and foreign affairs.

No police! Who’s gonna get the Taliban? Oh wait, we’ll be there, blowing money, for the next umpteen years. Nevermind.

Only a liberal would complain about 6 billion spent on law enforcement (one primary responsibility of gov’t) while ignoring and often excusing the TRILLIONS we have wasted and the hudreds of billions we continue to waste annually on failed social programs.

You gotta love the hypocrisy.

this law enforcement spending is not for our country. and it has apparently all been stolen or wasted. i don’t think it takes any particular sort of partisanship to be disappointed with that.

Sparkie,

I share the disappointment in the return on our investment.  I only inteneded to point out that liberals never expect the same from the trillions they love to waste.

Oh, and again, I reserve some judgment until I’ve heard the whole story.

at least our 6 billion bought us a lot more opium production… we can look forward to more of our teens abusing heroin. and the Taliban having tons of funding from drug smuggling.

Back in the real world, the Afghan Army is kicking the Taliban’s collective ass as we speak.  You can look it up.  Terrorism is a matter for the military, not the police.  As usual, rbb is being deceptive.

are you saying we didn’t spend $6B on police and have none?

or are you just distracting the thread?

why don’t you look up the opium production trends if you doubt what I typed.

Sparkie do you have evidence that all 6 billion or the majority thereof went to opium production, or is this just reactionary?

On the flip side and to expand on my previous point, trillions have gone into horribly flawed and such demonstrably failed social programs and a portion thereof is used to purchase drugs, alcohol, etc.

are you saying we didn’t spend $6B on police and have none?

None, “have none”?  Hardly accurate there Sparkie.  Read the article before you make such grossly exagerated claims.

Here’s the inconvenient truth about Afghani opium production:

When the Taliban was executing girls in soccer stadiums, they suppressed(but did not eliminate) opium production.  They had other funding sources.  Since we kicked them out, they have encouraged opium production, since they now need it to fund their terrorist activities.  This is due to our success in depriving the terrorists of their former money sources.
So, the reality is that it’s the Taliban which is responsible for the increased opium production, not the US.  Typical lying leftie propaganda.

RCB, Sparkie, does it really strike you as surprising that a country of 31 million people with a history of anarchy going back for four decades would have a bit of trouble re-establishing the traditions of civil government?

Yes, this takes time and money.  Get over it.

BB: I think your mistake here is in assuming that there is any content at all in anything these leftiebots write.  In reality, it’s pure BDS.  No content.
