A Team Called The Sabres

If you don’t know who the Sabres are, then maybe now is your time to get acquainted with them.  The Sabres are currently the top team in the NHL with a record of 44-16-5 (where the 5 is overtime losses) for a total of 93 points.  They also have 251 goals (more than any other team) in the 65 games they’ve played this season.  The only other team in the NHL with that many points right now is Nashville (in the Western Conference) who has played two more games than Buffalo and tallied 231 goals.

22 February was an emotional day for Sabres fans.  They were playing Ottawa, who is also in the North East Division, and Chris Neil, #25, cheap shots Buffalo’s captain, Chris Drury, #23.  This cheap shot led to fights and more than 100 penalty minutes assessed.  I didn’t get to see the game (because I live in a part of Ohio where no one has heard of hockey and I was at work anyway), and it hurts me that I’ve only seen one Sabres game this year.

If you want to see some highlights from the exciting game, click here (I don’t know how long that link will be active).

Why am I writing about this now?  Because someone sent me this Adam Sandler Song/YouTube video.

You may notice that Adam mentions that it’s Buffalo’s injured squad on the ice.  That was (and is) correct.  Buffalo has been playing with a lot of members from their AHL team, the Rochester Americans.

TORONTO (AP)—The Buffalo Sabres are first overall in the NHL despite missing eight regulars to injury.

Toni Lydman, Drew Stafford and Nathan Paetsch scored to lead the injury-riddled Sabres to a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

Buffalo, using a number of call-ups from the AHL affiliate in Rochester, has lost only once in regulation in its past 11 games (9-1-1).

And Rochester, even with all of the call-ups, still has more wins this year than any other team in their division.

The Sabres are an exciting organization.  If you haven’t been checking them out, or you have never been interested in hockey, this may be your year, and Buffalo may be your team.

Hockey is for chumps.  It’s baseball season now.  Spring Training is on, and in a week I’ll be down in Tampa in the stands watching my Yankees.

Not to take anything away from the Sabres… or the Yankees, either (MY team) but guess which college lacrosse team in ranked number 1 in both the press poll and the coaches poll, for the first time in that school’s history?

DURHAM, N.C. (AP)—Nearly a year after its season was canceled amid rape allegations against three players, Duke’s lacrosse team topped the national rankings for the first time in school history Monday.

The Blue Devils (3-0) received six of 10 first-place votes in the USILA coaches poll to move past Georgetown for the top spot, and also reached No. 1 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll, earning 13 of 16 first-place votes.

As an Atlantan, I normally pull for Georgia Tech against its ACC rivals.  But this year, just this once, I’m rooting for the Blue Devils’ lacrosse team and if they could somehow manage to win every single game this season, I couldn’t be happier.

Rob, I know that you aren’t serious, and you’re just looking for a reaction.

Bat One, because I don’t know much about lacrosse, do you think that their ranking is legit?  Or is it a political statement because of how their team has been slandered?

The above is a statement of pro activity.  If any Soldier were to tell me that he hoped what he was briefing was going to come to fruition, that would be unacceptable.  We in the Army do not have the luxury to ‘hope’ that things will end well.  Hope will get us killed.  Instead, we must plan and take action.  Hope is not a method.

As a leader I can never ‘hope’ that my Soldiers have the proper training.  I can never ‘hope’ that my Soldiers have the proper logistical supplies.  I can never ‘hope’ that my Soldiers will survive the next mission.  Hope is not a method; I live in the real world.

Sorry Paulie, I was just joking around.  Hockey is ok, I just don’t watch it much.

Paulie,

To be honest, I don’t know much about hockey either, but the ranking appears to be legitimate, rather than a purely political statement.

I think the team is making a statement, and I applaud them for it.  The accusations last year were baseless.  The behavior of DA Nifong in bringing the charges to placate his voters and win reelection, was unconscionable.  And the manner in which Duke University cut them off at the knees, again for reasons of political correctness, ought to be actionable.

Lacrosse is a tough sport from what I’ve seen, and these are some tough young men.  They deserve all the support their efforts can muster.

I would agree with rooting for them for what the team has gone through (not that I’ve ever rooted for college lacrosse… the only lacrosse I’ve ever rooted for was my step daughter’s 10-12 year old girl lacrosse team).

Some of my friends may be surprised by the fact that I would root for them because of the trials they have recently gone through.  Because… I didn’t feel the same way toward the New Orleans Saints.  The Saints went through adversity because the decision makers of that club chose to do business in a location that was below sea level and prone to disaster.  On the other hand, the Duke lacrosse team went through adversity because PEOPLE actively tried to destroy them with lies.  That’s why I can see the logic in rooting for a team that I had never cared for.

Rob, that’s ok.  If we can’t poke fun at each other over sports, then what can we poke fun at each other over?

Stars fan here.

So to me, Buffalo = whiners. They whined after Brett Hull scored a legitimate goal to win the Stanley Cup in 1999, and their hypocritical owner whined to Gary Bettman after this series of events a few weeks ago.

Sorry. Can’t root for them.

Brandon on March 6, 2007 at 10:46 am

I always root for the team with the most UND alumni on it.  Drew Stafford was a standout here for three years.

That’s tempered by the fact that Ryan Miller stole the Hobey Baker from Jeff Panzer.  Plus you have some Gophers like Vanek playing for the Sabres.

In the series that Brandon mentioned because the Dallas Team had four Sioux Alumni (Belfour, Ludwig and Hrkac plus Assistant Coach Rick Wilson) the Sabre’s only had Dixon Ward on their team.

Currently the only connection Dallas has has is Coaches Dave Tippett and Rick Wilson.

By the way Brandon, the Sabres do have a point.  If that goal had been reviewed it would have been negated.  However it was a stupid rule especially since Bulldog Brett Hull was in the crease legally and was playing the puck when it left the crease area.

I’m more of a college hockey fan if you haven’t noticed.

That whole Sabres/Stars stuff went on before I started noticing hockey for more than a passing, “Go Sabres!” out of obligation to choose a team.  (Hockey was the only local sport that I rooted for, and now Buffalo isn’t local.) The rule was dumb, and they got rid of it.  I would have “complained” too, and I can’t call it whining because it was legit!

Yeah, that’s a lot of college hockey knowledge!  I started getting interested in hockey while watching Colorado College games in CO Springs.  The only college game that I have seen this year was a Miami of Ohio game.  I wish I had the opportunity to play when I was younger, but I didn’t, so now I have to be an arm chair enforcer.

I like CC more (or should I say dislike them less) than any other WCHA (or college hockey) program.  They play the game the right way.

Obviously that doesn’t put them above my Sioux, hottest team in college hockey.

it’s not Adam Sandler, it’s a guy (Nick Mendola, I believe) from wgr550 (sports radio in Buffalo).

Thanks, Gary.  I certainly couldn’t tell the difference.

"treens,”

The normal courtesy, among adults at least, is to give some sort of credit or acknowledgment to the original author of material that you quote.

I also applaud the team for trying to make a statement. It is obvious for me personally that those accusations last year were baseless.
